Men's tennis loses to Gustavus 9-0; women hammer MSU 8-1

The Concordia womenās tennis team clobbered the visiting MSU squad 8-1 Tuesday night in Olson Forum. The men, however, did not fare so well. In their match against Gustavus last Saturday, they lost 9-0.

In the womenās number one singles match, junior Molly Hansen dropped her first set 2-6. She came back to even the match in the second set by winning a tie breaker 10-8. Hansen then prevailed in the third with a 6-4 victory.

Junior Sarah Shelley, at number three singles, had an easy time with her opponent, ringing up a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Carrie Peterson of MSU.

Hansen and Shelley also combined to further help the team with a 8-4 victory in number one doubles action. Junior Betsy Gehant was also victorious on the night as she won 7-5, 6-4 in her singles match. Her doubles partner, fellow junior Tricia Gau, came back from one set down to win 6-2 and 6-4 in the last two sets to come away with the win.

Gehant and Gau overwhelmed their opponent in doubles as well, winning 8-2 later that night.

Junior Heather Sandberg played well in her match Tuesday. She quickly ousted her opponent 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Stacey Bauck also won her match 6-3, 6-2.

First-year student Nicole Koskey and sophomore Sarah Holland accounted for the other Cobber win. They whipped their Dragon opponent, 8-3.

Menās Tennis

The menās team faltered against Gustavus Saturday, falling 9-0.

The Gusties simply overpowered the Cobbers as Concordia could muster just one set against Gustavus.

Sophomores Eric Nielson and Mike Tuchscherer, Concordiaās most successful duo so far this season, won the first set of their match 3-6, but lost the final two sets.

Tuchscherer and Nielsonās doubles record fell to 5-2 on the year.

Sophomore Eric Holmstrom, playing at number one singles, lost to Gustavusā Paul Jeffries 6-1, 6-1. Holmstrom drops to 0-3 on the year.

First-year student Ross Gustafson dropped to 3-4 overall after his 6-3, 6-4 loss to Gustavusā Tommy Fleming. He was not alone as all the Cobbers had trouble with their opponents.

Concordiaās team record now stands at 2-5 on the season.
