Concordia's Nathan Reiff, first-year student, took the MIAC wrestling tournament by storm. He had a first-round bye and pinned Lien from St. John's at 6:16. He advanced into the final and lost to Moore, the top seed from Augsburg.
Reiff's second place won him a wild card spot to the NCAA Division III finals. Nathan won one match and lost two in the toughest tournament in the U.S. Reiff has come off of his first year with a one of the most successful seasons in Cobber history. Nathan looks to be a contender for the NCAA title for the next three years.
Senior Dean Nielson finished off his final season with a third place at the MIAC tournament. Nielson lost to Pena, the top seed out of Augsburg in the first round. He went on to win his next two by fall at 4:06 and decision 8-7. Nielson advanced to wrestle for true second and lost a hard fought match against Grothe from St. John's 0-3. "I've had four tough but enjoyable years with the Concordia wrestling program, and I have to give my thanks to the coaches Doug Perry and Art Meyer for leading me through it," said Nielson.
Shawn Nicholas, the Cobbers' sophomore 134-pounder, had two wins in the tournament along with 150-pounder Rob Herbst.
Augsburg came out the clear winner with 141 points with St. John's at their heels with 72. Concordia placed fifth with 42 points.
The wrestlers had a nine man team for the tournament with junior captain Kevin Jackson out from an injury he sustained earlier in the season. The team is only losing senior captain Dean Nielson next year and is primarily made up of first-year students and sophomores.
Our ever-improving Cobber grapplers should look to contend for the MIAC title next year if they keep up the pace. From what they have shown during the second half of the season, we should look forward to seeing a winning '97.
