Patrick Lyndon Sonju, a 1991 Concordia grad and four year player in the Cobber basketball program, died Oct. 27, 1999.  He died suddenly from what are believed to have been complications caused by a tumor near his adrenal gland. He was 32.

He had been serving as teacher and head basketball coach at Buffalo High School in Buffalo, Minnesota. (See the  high school's tribute page to Pat.)

Pat is survived by his wife, the former Kimberly Ann Argue, a 1990 Cobber grad originally from Fergus Falls. They are the parents of two young children. Kim is a 6th grade teacher at the Buffalo Community Middle School.

Pat was the son of Lyndon and the late Merrilee Sonju, both Concordia grads. Lyndon was a 1965 Cobber grad and also a former Cobber basketball player. His grandparents are Sigurd and Vivian Sonju of Moorhead.

Patrick Lyndon Sonju

Patrick Lyndon Sonju, 32, Buffalo, MN, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, in Fairview-University Hospital, Minneapolis, MN.

He was born in Moorhead, MN Oct. 8, 1967, the son of Lyndon J. & Merrilee Anne Cameron Sonju.

Patrick was baptized on Dec. 10, 1967, in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Moorhead. He was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith on May 8, 1983, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Monticello, MN.

Patrick graduated from Monticello High School in 1986 with honors. While in high school, Pat was on the basketball team, football team, golf team, in the band, and served in Monticello High School's Student Government. He also represented Monticello in the American Legion Boys State.

In 1991, Patrick graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead with a degree in biology & education. While at Concordia, Pat played on its basketball team and was named captain in his senior year.

On Aug. 10, 1991, Patrick Sonju was joined in holy marriage to Kimberly Ann Argue in First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, MN. God blessed their marriage with two children, Cameron & Avery.

In the fall of 1991, Mr. Sonju began teaching at Central High School in Norwood/Young America, MN. He also served as the assistant basketball coach at Central High School.

In the fall of 1995, Patrick joined the teaching staff of Buffalo High School, teaching biology and serving as an assistant boys basketball coach. In the fall of 1997, Pat became head coach of Buffalo High School's boys basketball program.

In 1999, Patrick received his master's degree in educational administration from Minnesota State University in Mankato.

Patrick was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Monticello. He was very active through the years in organizing youth basketball programs.

Pat loved his family and especially enjoyed playing with his two children. He was also very fond of pheasant hunting.

Survived by his wife, Kimberly Ann Sonju, and children, Cameron Jack Sonju and Avery Ann Sonju; his father, Lyndon (Katherine) Sonju, Golden Valley, MN; a brother, Christopher (Kristen) Sonju, Norwood/Young America; paternal grandparents, Sigurd and Vivian Sonju, Moorhead; mother-in-law, Karen Argue, Fergus Falls; father-in-law, Wes Argue, Hamilton, ND; sister-in-law, Deb (Tim) Porter, White Bear Lake, MN; grandmother-in-law, Noody Dybdal, Fergus Falls; aunts, uncles, cousins, many other relatives and friends.

Patrick was preceded in death by his mother, Merrilee Sonju, in 1996; and by maternal grandparents, Donald & Mildred Cameron.

Funeral services for Patrick Sonju will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 11 AM in Buffalo High School. Pastor Robert Rusert will officiate, and interment follows in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
