Skaters wrap up '83 season
The Cobber hockey team played their last game of the 1982-83 season against Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn., Feb.19.
An 8-7 loss gave Concordia a 6-10 record, which was good for a fourth-place finish, in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Their overall record was 9-18.
"We knew it would be a building year since we had only one senior on the squad," said hockey coach Al Rice. "We had good speed, but had trouble putting the puck in the net until the end of the season."
As in their final contest, the Cobbers lost a number of games by one goal, which is typical of young teams, according to Rice.
"Playing well under the pressure of close games is something that only comes with experience," he said. "Next year we'll have more experience so we can strengthen our defense."
Junior Andrew Odegaard from Roseau, Minn., and sophomore David Swanberg from East Grand Forks, Minn., both at the wing position, and senior center Lonnie Vatnsdal, also from Roseau, provided a bright spot for the team. Among them, they accounted for 57 goals and 52 assists throughout the season.
