Season Outlook and Notes:
1998 Bethel Football Preview
The 1998 Bethel Royal football team will look to many players to
contribute, unlike past years when running back Jeremy Tvedt and
quarterback Matt Lundeen were able to almost single handedly lead the
team.
The Royals have a quality group of seniors which will provide great
leadership on and off the field.
On offense, Bethel will be looking to replace school record holder and
All-MIAC quarterback Matt Lundeen. Sophomores Joe Persuitti (Shoreview,
MN)
and Bart Becker (Conrad, MT), a transfer from Western Montana University
are the top two candidates to lead the offense. The Royals have
perhaps
the top receiving corp in the conference, led by two All-MIAC players,
senior Eric Runyan (Verndale, MN), and junior Jeremy Belisle
(Big Lake,
MN). Sophomores Eric Carlson (Wadena, MN) and Ben Matthews (Milaca,
MN) add
to the group of receivers who are all big, strong, and fast. Senior
tight
end Hokan Bengtston (Northfield, MN) will begin his third year as a
starter
and also handles the punting duties. The rushing yardage will come
from a
variety of sources for the Royals, with junior Dave Dickman (Black
River
Falls, WI) and sophomore Josh Savageau (Blaine, MN) getting a majority
of
the carries. The offensive line will be bigger and stronger than last
year,
but not as experienced. Juniors Chico Rowland (Minneapolis, MN)
and Eric
Swan (Oak Grove, IL) will anchor the offensive unit up front.
Defensively, the Royals return six starters, led by senior linebacker
Ben
Geisler (Blaine, MN). Junior Josh Schleuter (Hutchinson, MN) gained
valuable experience last year. He received valuable playing time as
the
year went on as the middle linebacker. The front four will have big
and
strong players, but will be inexperienced. Juniors Pete Mellema (Willmar,
MN) and Luke Carlson (St. Paul, MN), and sophomore Dan Porta (Eden
Prairie,
MN) will be looked upon to contribute from the defensive end position.
Senior Aaron Ferrier (Lapeer, MI) is a returning starter at defensive
tackle. In the defensive backfield, Bethel returns many players that
earned
experience last year, senior cornerbacks Aaron Redman (Plymouth, MN
) and
Ryan Carlson (Wadena, MN) will be joined by sophomore Kris Collins
(Alexandria, MN). All three started games last year. Junior All-MIAC
safety
Kirk Midthun (Dodge Center, MN) returns for his third year of calling
the
signals for the defensive backs.
