Season Outlook and Notes:
New Macalester College head coach Dennis Czech returns to his alma mater to take over the  football program. The Scots are looking to improve on last year's disappointing 1-9 record.

Czech, who graduated from Macalester in 1983 after rushing for 2,394 yards as a standout  running back, is optimistic about the program's future. "Macalester's football program can be successful again," said  Czech. "I am familiar with the college and realize the value of a Macalester education. I believe I will be able to  effectively commumcate the unique aspects of a Macalester education to prospective recruits in a positive light. I also hope   to generate essential alumni support for the program."

Macalester had a solid defensive unit last season, despite the team's overall record, and  will call on this defense to lead the way again. The Scots were ranked first in the conference in pass defense a year ago.  Inside linebacker Eddie Ray (Sr. Three Rivers, TX) led the team in tackles with 140 last year after picking up 131 the  year before when he earned all- conference honors. Clovis Ray (Sr. Three Rivers, TX), Eddie's twin brother, returns to the  other inside linebacking spot after registering 82 tackles. Outside linebacker Ben Hampstead (Sr., Mattawan, MI) also  returns after making 74 stops and six quarterback sacks in '97. Returners Mike Occhicone (Jr., Concord, CA/Clayton  Valley), Toby Curfman (Sr., Arlington, TX) and Dana Moody (Sr., Ware, MA/Cathedral) give the Scots experience in the  defensive backfield.

Macalester scored just 60 points in 10 games last fall and must improve dramatically on  the offensive side of the ball. Czech will look for yardage from RBs Sam Randel (Jr., Independence, MO/Fort Osage) and  Bear Stephens (Sr., Lewistown, MT/Fergus). Randel ran for 458 yards and a 4.1 average last year. Veterans  Steve Vorpahl (Sr., Janesville, WI/Craig), Brian Vice (Sr., Omaha, NE/North), Ben Miller (Sr., Minneapolis, MN/Washburn)  and Nate McDowell (Sr  Pittsford, MI) return to the offensive line. Aaron Quitmeyer (So., Williston, ND) appears  to be the top candidate for the quarterback spot.

Matt Kessler (Sr., Medord, OR/Phoenix) returns for his fourth season as the kicker/punter.  Kessler booted a 48-yard field goal as a sophomore and had a 49 yarder last year.
