Season Outlook/Notes:
The Pipers (10-14 overall, 7-13 MIAC) will undergo dramatic “changing of the guard” as they enter the 1998-99 campaign.
Eight seniors, including three-time all-conference performer Chris Dueffert and two-time selection Will Roseberg, have graduated, leaving the squad’s fortunes in the hands of a talented-but very much untested group of young players.
Leading the charge will be returning junior starters Phil Gardner (F, 6’3, Lakeville/8.7ppg, 4.6 rpg) and Jeff Smock (G, 6’0, Big Lake/8.4ppg, team high 86 assists), Sophomore lettermen Ryan Arndt (G, 6’2, Waconia), Chris Bloomquist (F, 6’6, Roseville/3.6ppg, 3.7rpg) and MikeGranbois (G, 6’2, New Town, ND) as well as medical hardship freshman Jeff Campbell (G, 6’5, New Richmond, WI) will join Smock and Gardner to form a solid nucleus. In addition, several key performers off of the Pipers’ 14-4 JV squad, including junior Kris Anderson (C, 6’5, Coon Rapids) and Sophomore Tyler Gehrking (C, 6’10, Byron) will play major roles this winter.
Replacing Dueffert , Roseberg (988 points and
537 rebounds), and the leadership of their
six graduating classmates will be an obviously tall task.
Nonetheless, 4 th year head coach Tom Gilles is very excited
about the 1998-99 Pipers. “Needless to say, we’ll be hard pressed
to replace the nearly 2,700 career
points that Chris and Will scored between them.
However, I have a hunch that this young bunch will pull
together and find a way to get it done at both ends of the floor.”
