Season Outlook/Notes
• 1997-98 Toms earned school’s 11th consecutive MIAC playoff
berth (top-four in standings), upset league champ Augsburg in semifinals
77-76, lost 66-62 to Gustavus in finals.
•UST won nine of last 11 regular-season games in 1997-98 and
was 12-1 last season when it shot 48% or better. Toms made 39% from 3-point
range, averaging 7.3 made a game.
• UST has never had a losing record in 18 seasons under Coach
Steve Fritz
• UST expects to have deepest team in recent years with as many
as four athletic freshmen plus a transfer expected to contribute and seven
of top eight players return from last season.
•Juniors Kip Sparby and Joe Buri were first-team all-conference
last season and will start for third consecutive year Sparby has
played all 51 games with 658 pts, 309 reb., 158 asst., 119 3-pointers and
has made 76% FT. Buri has also played all 51 games and with 572 pts., 240
reb., 134 asst., 65 steals, 64 3-pointers.
•Senior co-captains Sean Stephens and Matt Arnold alsohave solid
career stats. Stephens has played in 71 gameswith 397 points, 122 asst.,
and 137 reb. while converting .793% FT. Including his freshman season at
St. Olaf, Arnold has 844 points, 251 rebounds while shooting 73% FT.
•Toms have nine of their first 14 MIAC games at home but finish
with grueling stretch. In 13-day, five-game road stretch from Feb. 3-15,
Toms play at Augsburg, Carleton, Concordia, Bethel and Gustavus, then finish
regular-season Feb. 17 at home vs. rival St. John’s.

guard Kip Sparby scored 34 points and junior forward
Joe Buri scored 20 as host St. Thomas (1-0 MIAC, 2-2 overall) outscored
visiting
St. Marys (0-1, 2-3) 49-25 in the second half Saturday, including an
18-5
game-closing run, en route to a 19-point MIAC mens basketball win.
The Cardinals broke to a
17-5 lead in the opening minutes. The Toms
whittled away the lead and cut the deficit to 29-24 at halftime.
UST freshman Mark Buri came
off the bench lead a 10-0 run that give the
Toms a modest second-half cushion. His 3-point basket put UST ahead
to stay at
36-33 with 14:17 to play, and the lead climbed to 43-33 moments later.
St. Marys
pulled within 55-49 with 4:51 to go, but the Cardinals didnt make a
field goal
in final 4:50 and were outscored 18-5 in that span.
St. Marys sophomore Ryan
Rankin had 18 points and junior John Oleksyn
had 13 points and eight rebounds. The Cards shot 52% in the first half
(12-of-23) but made only 18% in the second half (4-of-22). Conversely,
the Toms
shot 30% in the first half (7-of-23) and 57% in the second half (13-of-23).
St. Thomas made 24-of-33
free throws, including 13-of-16 by Sparby, who
played all 40 minutes. UST also made 9-of-22 threes to SMUs 1-of-10.
Freshman
Cole Butler had six points and seven rebounds off the bench.
