Season Outlook/Notes:
Fast Facts

The team posted its second-best record ever last year at 11-14…Peterson is currently fourth on the school career blocked shots list, fifth on the career field goal percentage list and second on the career free-throw percentage list…Seegers is second on the career field-goal percentage list… Peterson was the top scorer in 15 of 25 games for the Carls last season… Carleton’s last winning season was 1989-90... Carleton players dominate the MIAC records in free throws, including the records for most individual free throws made in a game and season, both held by Lisa Nordeen ‘90, and most individual free throw attempts in a season, also held by Nordeen.

Season Outlook

The Carleton women’s basketball team may have finished with the second-best record in school history last season at 11-14, but coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen and her players are hardly satisfied, and have reasons for optimism in 1998-99.

"It’s everybody’s expectation that we’ll improve this year," said Metcalf-Filzen, who enters her second season as head coach after having the job on an interim basis last season. Year two, says Metcalf-Filzen, is already easier because she doesn’t have to install an entirely new system.

Metcalf-Filzen is also buoyed by a strong corps of returning players, including four starters, which should compensate for the loss of All-MIAC honorable-mention player Brooke Anderson to graduation. Center Laurie Peterson, who will miss early-season workouts because of an off-campus studies program, averaged 16.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, was an All-MIAC selection and was named to the Division III All-West Region First Team by Columbus Multimedia as a sophomore last season. According to Metcalf-Filzen, Peterson figures to emerge as one of the league’s premier post players this year.

Complementing Peterson inside will be sophomore post Bridget Seegers, who averaged 9.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game en route to being selected as a member of the All-MIAC First-Year Team.

The team also can call on three returning starters: junior Kathleen Exel, sophomore Lisa Cawley and junior point guard Jocelyn Spoon. Spoon will shift to her natural position of shooting guard this year, thanks to the arrival of sophomore point guard Sara Tompkins, a transfer from the University of South Dakota.

In particular, Metcalf-Filzen feels that her sophomore-laden team (including guard Jamie Mueller and center Monica Thilges) gained valuable experience last year. She’s also counting on newcomers Tompkins and first-year Renée Willette, a standout for the Carleton volleyball team, to contribute immediately.

Metcalf-Filzen is optimistic about her team’s prospects this year, but she concedes that the MIAC is a tough conference with some traditional powerhouses, including the preseason national No. 1, the College of St. Benedict.

"We have to focus on us. We are not a team of superstars, but we are very balanced," Metcalf-Filzen said. " I like to say we’re an equal-opportunity team."
