1998-1999 Season Outlook
The College of St. Benedict Blazers move into their second season of play with an extremely positive outlook. Following a successful inaugural season, the Blazers look to build on an 11-8-2 record. Head Coach Bill Kelly and Asst. Coach Tom Peart put great effort into recruiting and brought in 17 talented first-year players to go with the 8 returning letter winners.
The new Blazers bring in a great deal of speed, scoring ability and added mobility, as well as creativeness in both the attacking zone and the defensive zone. The Blazers will throw two new forechecks and a new power play at their opponents this coming season. Fans of the game will see a great deal of puck movement and aggressiveness all over the ice.
The incoming talent this year will bring a new look to St. Ben’s, building on the legacy of last year’s team, namely- tenacity, an incredible work ethic and the ability to have fun playing the great game of hockey.
The Blazers open up their season on Nov. 11 with a non-Conference game
against the University of Wisconsin-Superior. St. Ben’s first Conference
opponent is Augsburg College on Nov. 22. The favorites in the MIAC
are Augsburg College, the first ever varsity team in the state of Minnesota,
and Gustavus Adolphus College. Both are returning a core group of
players that have great skills and extensive experience. St. Ben’s,
with their experienced returning players and influx of new talent, look
to challenge for the first ever MIAC women’s hockey title. St. Mary’s,
St. Thomas, and St.Catherine’s will also compete in the conference, but
all three will have very young squads. Next year the MIAC will have
three new teams added to the conference; Concordia-Moorhead, Hamline and
Bethel.
