Season Outlook/Notes:
Head Coach Scott Moe, entering his third season behind the bench for
the Gusties, looks to the 1998-99 season with optimism. Gustavus compiled
a record of 16-12-1 in their first official season of play last year, however
this year’s schedule looks to be much more challenging with 11 games versus
Division I programs, the addition of MIAC play against varsity squads from
Augsburg, St. Ben’s, St. Thomas, St. Kate’s and St. Mary’s and a trip out
East to play Division III powerhouses Middlebury and RPI.
The Gusties look to counter the difficult schedule with quality depth at all positions. The depth will create a more balanced scoring attack from all lines. Noelle Skalko, who was named to Women’s Hockey News College Division First Team All-America squad, returns as the team’s top scorer (28g, 40a - 68 pts).
Other quality forwards returning include Michelle Zaske (18g, 26a - 44 pts.), Emily Ziemer (20g, 13a - 33 pts.) and Tesa Pfeifer (14g, 10a, - 24 pts.). Erica Buck, who missed most of last year with a severe case of mononucleosis, is also expected to add some scoring and junior Carrie Stefaniak, a tranfer from Augsburg, gives the Gusties another top caliber goal scorer.
Newcomers who expect to help on the attack are Sarah Garrison of West Des Moines, Iowa, Alyssa Stanley (Bloomington/Jefferson), Nikki Norton (White Bear Lake) and Jennifer Cannon of Sioux City, Iowa.
Defensively, the Gusties will be look to be much deeper and more talented. Sophomore Ann Marie Giefer and senior Tiffany Holmen are two solid returners and they will join with talented newcomers Linnea Carlson (Roseville H.S.) and Jenny McCall (Visitation H.S.)
Sophomore Jen Zywotko will be back between the pipes and Coach Moe feels
like she will be one of the top netminders in the MIAC. Zywotko compiled
a record of 11-11-1 last season with a goals against average of 4.91.
