SEASON OUTLOOK
Taking over any collegiate hockey program is a huge endeavor, there's always that period of adjustment between the new head coach and the players. The expectations are high and many times it's pretty tough for the new kid on the block to fill the shoes of his predecessor. So imagine how Jeff Vizenor, a girls' high school hockey coach from St. Cloud, Minn., must have felt when he accepted the position of head coach at Saint Mary's University. Intimidated? Overwhelmed? In over his head? Hardly.

In fact, Vizenor feels right at home as the Cardinals head coach, after all, the program is as green as he is.
"Being a new coach can be a bit intimidating, but I don't think that's been a problem here, because the program is just starting up," said Vizenor, who spent last year as the head coach of the St. Cloud Icebreakers a combination of players from St. Cloud Tech, Apollo and Cathedral High Schools leading them to an 18-4 record in their inaugural season in 1997-98. ³I don't have any footsteps I have to follow in, I don't have any past that I have to live up to. "We get to start the tradition from scratch and that's what's really exciting."

The Cardinals do have some tradition to build on, having played the last three seasons as a club team. And with several of those players including senior Jess Bauer (Winona, Minn.) and junior Megan Johnson (St. Paul, Minn.) among those on the Cardinals' first official varsity roster, Vizenor does
have a solid foundation to begin building. "There was a period of adjustment for a lot of the players," admitted Vizenor, referring to his stricter rules and more structured practices. "But overall I think everyone is excited about what we are about to embark on. "This is a totally new experience for everyone involved."

Vizenor isn't about to predict conference championships (SMU joins Augsburg,  Gustavus, St. Thomas, St. Benedict and St. Catherine as MIAC's varsity hockey teams for the 1998-99 season) in his first season - but if he has his way, that could very well be the case in the near future.

"This year, our No. 1 goal is to work hard and to have fun," Vizenor said. "We'd also like to qualify for the conference tournament (the top four teams qualify) and we'd like to split our eight games with NCAA Division I schools St. Cloud State and Bemidji State." Those goals, however, are just the first chapter in what Vizenor hopes is a Cardinals' best-seller in the future.

³I look five years down the road and I want people to see us as a perennial power in women's hockey - like they see St. Olaf and St. Ben's in volleyball and Saint Mary's in men's hockey," Vizenor said. "We're laying the groundwork this year, but in five years, I expect us to be a constant contender for the MIAC title and one of the top Division III women's hockey programs in the Midwest."
