Season Outlook/Notes
Varsity womens hockey. Kevin Gorg likes the sound of it. Gorg
is the head coach of the inaugural varsity team at St. Thomas.
Gorg, a former all-MIAC goalie, hopes to bring some elements of his playing experience in the Toms nationally regarded mens program to the womens program.
But first, hes just trying to teach the basics, put players in the right spots, and prepare them for the competition that lies ahead.
"We obviously have a young team, and one I think will only get better, Gorg said. "Its a very hard-working group. Were trying to keep things light in practice. I think the players are especially glad they dont have the 5:30 a.m. practices the club team were stuck taking with so little ice time available before."
A look at the player bios reveals some interesting facts -- there
are standout golfers and soccer players; a karate black belt; even an entry
in the Miss Minnesota pagaent. Like most womens college teams, the Toms
don't have a wealth of experienced players, but Gorg said thats part of
the fun the 1998-99 season will offer. "We dont have a lot of experienced
players right now," Gorg said. "Were just dealing with
the fundamentals of the game -- making good passes, improving our skating
and making better shots. The attitude has been great."
Sophomore Michelle Campbell, a co-captain, played several seasons
with the Minnesota Thoroughbreds are will be one of the top players. The
other captain is Amy Frey, the lone senior. Junior Lisa Schlatter,
a varsity golfer for UST, and soph Jodi Stepaniak, a womens soccer
standout for the Toms, bring some excellent athletic ability. Schlatter
and Stepaniak are among eight players who played on the St. Thomas-St.
Catherine club team last season, joining Frey; sophomores Tina Simonson
and Melissa Easton; and juniors Kate Leas, Sarah Midler and Libby Winzeler.
UST has 19 players out this year and plays a 25-game schedule.
Gorg expects to add at least 10 players each year. "Our goal in the future
is to have 40-50 players come out and eventually have a junior-varsity
team," Gorg said. "We want to be like the St. Thomas men -- a dominant
MIAC program and one of the
nations best Division III programs."
