repeat

MIAC Wrestling Saturday at St. Thomas
Augsburg is a heavy favorite to win the 1998 MIAC Wrestling Championships
to be
held Saturday at the University of St. Thomas. The Auggies, who won
nationals in
1997 and are ranked No. 1 again in NCAA Division III this season, have
won the
MIAC team title the last 11 years and 21 of the last 23 seasons. Augsburg
has
four returning champions and six returning All-Americans. The Auggies
dominated
the MIAC Duals tournament last month, winning 49 of the 50 matches
they
contested (including several forfeits).
The six-team competition starts at 10 a.m. in Schoenecker Arena. All-day
tickets
are $4 for adults and $2 for students. The meet also serves as the
qualifier for
the March 6-7 NCAA Division III Championships, to be held in Waterloo,
Ia. The
10 weight-class champions and 12 other wild-card picks will advance
to
nationals.
Returning champions are Concordia's Nathan Reiff
(177) (He'll be at 167 this year) and Augsburg's Henry Gerten (118),
Jamie Larkin (134), Wade Johnson (142) and John Pena (Hwt). Pena,
Johnson and Gerten also won MIAC championships in 1996.
