Winter 1998-99 Concordia Sports Wrap-Up

Hockey and Women's Track Lead Winter Teams

The Concordia winter sports scene was highlighted by an appearance by the Hockey team in the MIAC Playoffs Championship and a second consecutive MIAC Indoor Championship by the Women's Track and Field team.  The men's Track and Field team placed third at the MIAC Indoor.  The two young Cobber basketball teams showed promise for the future with the women finishing 5th and the men placing 10th in the MIAC. The third year Women's Swimming team finished 6th in the MIAC. The Cobber wrestling team finished 4th at the 6-team MIAC Championship Meet. The women's club hockey team posted a winning season as they prepared for Varsity status next year. And fourteen Cobbers earned Academic All-MIAC honors.

Men's Hockey

The Cobbers took third in the MIAC regular season with a 9-5-2 record and advanced to the MIAC Playoffs Championship series before falling to St. Thomas. The Cobbers were led by a trio of All-MIAC underclassmen: defenseman Rob Gramer ('00, Moorhead), forward Mike Gast ('01, Fargo) and goalie Bryan Howard ('01, Gold River, CA).

Women's Track

The Cobbers captured their second consecutive MIAC Championship behind Central Region Indoor Track's Athlete of the Year Heidi Brenden ('01, Minot, ND) and MIAC long jump champion Karin McGregor ('00, Pelican Rapids). Brenden won the 600, 800 and 1500 meter runs at the MIAC and was named the Meet's "Most Outstanding Athlete."  Laura Utke ('99, Oriska, ND) placed second in the MIAC in the weight throw and went on to finish 3rd at the NCAA Division III Championship meet at Ohio Northern University March 12-13.  This was Utke's second all-America performance. She finished second in the hammer throw at last spring's NCAA Championships.

Men's Track

The Cobbers continued to be a power in the MIAC, placing third at the conference meet, .3 points behind runner-up St. Olaf. The Cobbers were led by Micah Benson ('00, Moorhead) and Jeff Hertel ('01, Fargo).  Benson, despite spending the winter on the varsity basketball team, set a school record in the long jump at the with a leap of 22-11 3/4 to place second at the MIAC.  Hertel, who underwent brain surgery in the fall to repair a vascular birth defect, placed second in the MIAC Pentathlon with 3307 points.

Women's Basketball

The Cobber women, without a senior in the lineup, posted a 15-7 record in the MIAC, 16-9 overall. The fifth place Cobbers were led by two All-MIAC sophomores, guard Brandi Myers ('0, Glyndon) and forward Sara Spears ('01, Spicer).

Men's Basketball

The Cobbers' lone senior, Brian Kesselring ('99, Fargo) capped an excellent career by earning All-MIAC honors while leading his team in scoring.  The Cobbers finished 5-19, 3-17 in the MIAC but are hoping to contend for a playoff spot next year after two years of playing mostly underclassmen.

Women's Swimming

The Cobber swimmers posted a 6-2 dual record and a 6th place finish in the MIAC Championships behind All-MIAC performers Shana Letnes ('01, Fort Collins, CO) and Carrie Bunger ('01, Bozeman, MT).  Letnes won the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the MIAC and placed 15th at nationals in the 100.
