4/26 Cobbers Douse Blazers in Consolation
Concordia will now play St. Olaf in the fifth place match of the MIAC Tournament.
4/25 Cobbers Fall Out of the Championship
4/25 Cobbers Start MIAC Tourney With
A Bang, Beat Mac 7-2.
Concordia will now play second-ranked St. Thomas in the quarterfinal of the tournament later in the day.
4/21 Cobbers Can't Tame the Wildcats,
Concordia couldn't recover from their three doubles losses and ended up dropping their final regular season match of the MIAC to St. Kate's 9-0. It was the Cobbers second consecutive loss and places them in seventh place entering this weekend's conference tournament at Gustavus.
The biggest surprise of the match for Concordia (4-6 MIAC, 4-6) was the loss of the number one doubles team of Erica Tollefson (Jr., Madison, Minn./Lac Qui Parle HS) and Beth Meier (Fr., Crookston, Minn./Crookston HS). The tandem was undefeated coming into the match and had run off a streak of seven straight wins. The team could never get on top of the Wildcats twosome of Cristin Tiegs and Amy Willhite and lost 8-6. That match proved to be the closest contest in the affair as all the Cobber singles were swept in straight sets.
Emily Waldahl (Fr., Aldrich, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) battled in the number five singles spot but ultimately fell to Nikki Richter 6-3, 6-3.
Concordia finishes the year 4-6 in the MIAC and will likely play Carleton
or St. Kate's in the first round of the MIAC tournament which will be held
at Gustavus on April 25-26.
The Cobber women's tennis team extended their winning streak to three matches on Saturday, and then saw it fall on Sunday. Concordia beat Hamline 5-4 at home on Saturday, in front of a festive Parent's Day crowd, but lost by a similar 5-4 score to St. Ben's on Sunday.
The number one doubles team of Erica Tollefson (Jr., Madison, Minn./Lac Qui Parle HS) and Beth Meier (Fr., Crookston, Minn./Crookston HS) took both their matches over the weekend and pushed their overall record to 7-1. Tollefson and Meyer also collected victories in singles play over the weekend.
Concordia scored a second doubles win on Sunday from the tandem of Miriam Wilhelm (Sr., Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) and Annie Styba (Fr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS). Paired for the first time this season, the team gave Concordia a tough number two doubles team.
The Cobbers will host St. Kate's on Monday, April 21 at 3:30pm in their last dual match of the season. The team will then play at the MIAC Championship tournament on April 25-26 at Gustavus.
Like the men, the women's tennis team split their weekend matches with Macalester and St. Thomas. The Cobbers beat Macalester 5-4 on Saturday, April 5 and lost 9-0 to the Tommies on Sunday, April 6.
Against the Scots, the Cobbers swept the three doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead and then hold on in the singles matches to win 5-4. Annie Styba (Fr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS), playing in the number six singles position, gave Concordia an unexpected win by downing her opponent 6-4, 6-3. Since being placed in the top six singles spots, Styba has rattled off a 2-2 record and helped Concordia win three straight matches. Miriam Wilhelm (Sr., Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) was the other singles winner for Concordia as she beat Macalester's Erin Case 6-3, 6-3.
The doubles team of Erica Tollefson (Jr., Madison, Minn./Lac Qui Parle HS) and Beth Meier (Fr., Crookston, Minn./Crookston HS) continued their unbeaten ways as they won their match 8-4. Unfortunately they dropped their match on Sunday against the number one doubles team of St. Thomas, but their overall season record is still a hefty 5-1. The other two doubles teams of Wilhelm and Jessica Strey (Jr., St. Peter, Minn/St. Peter HS) and Emily Waldahl (Fr., Aldrich, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) and Lindsay Hoaglund (So., St. Michael, Minn./Blaine HS) also won on Saturday but lost against the Tommies. Strey and Waldahl won their match against the Scots 8-4, while Waldahl and Hoaglund edged their Macalester opponents 8-5.
Concordia will host Hamline on Saturday, April 12 at 2:00pm and then play at St. Ben's on Sunday, April 13 at 2:00pm.
4/06 Cobbers Have Win Streak Snapped,
Lose to St. Thomas.
4/05 Cobbers Beat Macalester 5-4, Extend
Win Streak to Three.
3/22 Cobbers Stage Singles Rally to
Down Bethel 5-4.
Concordia won four of the six singles matches to rally and beat Bethel 5-4.
The match came down to the final singles match where the Cobbers' Beth Meier (Fr., Crooks ton, Minn.) came back from a 6-1 deficit in the tie-breaker to win 11-9. Meter, playing in the number two singles slot, lost the first set 7-5 and then took the second set 6-4 to set up the match-clinching tie-breaker. It was Meter's first collegiate singles victory.
Bethel won two of the three doubles matches and then the first singles match to jump to a 3-1 lead. The only doubles win for Concordia was the number one team of Meter and Erica Tollefson (Jr., Madison, Minn.). The pair needed to go to a tie-breaker to narrowly defeat Bethel's pair of Jen Kastner and Becky Trickett. Meier and Tollefson are undefeated in doubles competition this season as they pushed their record to 4-0.
Besides Meter, the other three singles wins for Concordia were tallied by Miriam Wilhelm (Sr., Princeton, Minn.), Emily Waldahl (Fr., Aldrich, Minn.) and Annie Styba (Fr., Shoreview, Minn.). For Waldahl and Stab it was their first singles win of the year.
Concordia (2-3 MIAC, 2-3) will have a two-week layoff before they play a weekend doubleheader on April 5 at Macalester and April 6 at St. Thomas.
3/16 Cobbers Beat St. Mary's 5-4.
3/15 Cobbers Lose to Gustavus 9-0.
2/23 Cobbers Lose to Carleton 8-1.
2/22 Cobbers Lose to St. Olaf 8-1.
