Ben's Quintangular.
The Concordia women's track and field team edged host St. Ben's, 222-213, in a close battle for the team title at the St. Ben's Quintangular. The Cobbers were led by three provisional national qualifying performances and eight individual event victories. Provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division III Nationals were Beth Moen (Sr., Andover, Minn.), Mariah Mougey (Jr., Enderlin, N.Dak.), and Erica Eastley (Fr., LaMoure, N.Dak.). Moen had her first ever national qualifying mark in the NCAA's newest event for women, the 3000 meter steeplechase. Her winning time of 11:59.83 was only 17/100th under that qualifying time of 12:00.00. Mariah Mougey won the hammer throw with a personal record toss of 153-3. That mark places her 11th on the national list. First year thrower Erica Eastley threw the javelin 129-7 on the very first throw of her collegiate career. That initial toss won the competition, placed her 10th on the NCAA Division III list and breaks the school record for the new javelin (since 1999). Eastley was a double winner as she won the discus as well - with a fling of 113-1. Other double winners for the Cobber women were Kelli Tranby (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) in the long jump (17-2.75) and as part of the 4x400 relay team, and Kristina Hall (So., Minot, N.Dak.), who won the 400 hurdles with a personal best of 66.50 and part of the 4x400 relay team. Rounding out the Concordia first place finishes was Annie Knierim who won the triple jump with a personal best effort of 36-5.5. The multi-event athetes will compete in the St. John's Heptathlon on April 14 and 15. Next competition will be the Kansas Relays, for those who qualify, April 18-20. Cobber MIAC Championship Preview:
Concordia will be counting on the strength of their field events to carry them to the top of the MIAC. The team possesses two outstanding throwers in Becky Lacher (Sr., Princeton, Minn.) and Mariah Mougey(Jr., Enderlin, N.Dak.) who will be looking to finish 1-2 in the weight throw. Both athletes have provisionally qualified for the national meet in the event, and both marks should be good enough to get them into the meet. Lacher will also be a contender in the shot put, along with teammate Erica Eastley (Fr., LaMoure, N.Dak.). The other key performer for the Cobbers will be Kelli Tranby (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.), who won last year's MIAC outdoor long jump and was recently named the MIAC Women's track Athlete of the Week. She has provisionally qualified for the nationals in the event with a jump of 17-11 1/2. Tranby will also compete in the 55 meters, the 200 meters and the 4x200 meter relay. Traditionally, the Cobbers have excelled in the middle and long distance events, and this year should be more of the same. Beth Moen (Sr., Andover, Minn.) leads a corps of young runners into the MIAC championship meet. Moen's best events are the 3000 and 5000 meters and will be in the hunt in both races. If the young Cobber squad can continue their trend of improvement, then their streak of top flight finishes at the MIAC Indoor Championships should continue. 2/26 Kelli Tranby Named MIAC Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
Tranby won the long jump at the St. Ben's Quadrangular last weekend with a jump of 17-8.25. It is the second best jump in the MIAC this year, trailing only her own season-best mark of 17-11.5. That mark is 7.5 inches farther than the nearest competitor, and she is currently ranked 20th on the NCAA Division III qualifying list. Tranby is the defending MIAC Outdoor long jump champion reaching 18-1.75 in only her first season in the event. 2/22 Cobbers Finish 2nd at
St. Ben's Quadrangular.
As a team, the Cobbers won five different events. The highlights of the meet for Concordia came in the middle distance events, where Carrie Franson (Fr., Coleharbor, N.Dak.) and Lisa Owen (So., Minot, N.Dak.) set marks for the years low times in the 800 and 1000 meter runs. Franson lowered her own mark by over five seconds in the 800. Her time of 2:23.1 is the best of the indoor year for the first year runner, who continues to improve. Owen dropped her best effort in the 1000 by three full seconds. Other event winners for Concordia included the 4x400 relay team of Sheena Berg (Fr., Barnesville, Minn.), Franson, Kari Rosenfeldt (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.) and Kendra Lee (Jr., Jamestown, N.Dak.) who finished in a time of 4:17.01, which is the fastest by a Cobber squad this year. Kelli Tranby (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) won the long jump with a leap of 17-8 1/4, and is the favorite to win the event at the MIAC Championships.Becky Lacher (Sr., Princeton, Minn.) won the weight throw with a toss of 46-5 1/4, and teammate Mariah Mougey (Jr., Enderlin, N.Dak.) finished second with a mark of 45-10. 2/15 Cobbers Compete at Bison Classic. 2/15 The Concordian, Cobber

Her throw of 62.63m (205'5") in the preliminary round placed her in sixth place heading into the finals. In the finals, her toss of 61.04m (200'3") earned her an eighth place for the competition. It is the highest finish in her career at a World Championship or Olympic meet, and it was also the first time she has qualified for the finals in an event of that magnitude.
