News and Meet Details:
(Grinnell, Iowa)-- Concordia once again used the pack mentality in the NCAA Division III Central Region Meet and paced themselves to a 13th place finish.
Lisa Owen (Sr., Mineral, Virg./Minot (ND) HS) was able to break out of the pack and claimed 46th place in a time of 23:39. The meet completes a season where Owen was the Cobbers' top runner in all but one of the meets that she ran. She earned all-conference honors at the MIAC meet by finishing ninth and narrowly missed all-region honors, finishing only 20 seconds behind the final all-region award winner.
After Owen came a group of five Cobber runners that placed from 76th to 89th. Erin Anderson (Jr., Bowman, N.Dak./Bowman HS) pulled away from the group towards the end of the race and finished the course in a time of 24:22. Anderson was the team's seventh place runner at the MIAC championship meet two weeks ago. Behind Anderson was a pair first-year runners Brittany Berger (Fr., Kalispell Mont./Flathead HS) finished third on the team with a mark of 24:25 and Alissa Bilden (Fr., Miles City, Mont./Custer City HS) was close behind at 24:30. Bilden barely eclipsed Natalie Hanson (So., Rogers, Minn./Elk River HS) who finished in a time of 24:31. Julie Miller (Jr. Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) was the final member of the group. She carded a time of 24:41, which was good for sixth place among Concordia runners. Carrie Fransen (Jr., Coleharbor,Minn/Underwood HS) rounded out the top seven of Concordia, finishing in a time of 25:25.
(St. Paul, Minn.)-- Lisa Owen (Sr., Mineral, Virg./Minot (ND) HS) ran a career-best time of 19:15.0 to finish ninth at the MIAC Cross Country Championship Meet and earn all-conference honors. It is the first time that Owen has earned all-conference honors, after posting all-conference honorable mention times in her first three seasons. As a team, the Cobbers finished in eighth place with a final team score of 228. Gustavus won the meet with a score of 68. Koby Hagen of Macalester won the individual title in a time of 18:46.0.
The Cobbers were unable to place another runner in the top 40 of the meet but had a pack of runners finish from 57th through 62nd place. Natalie Hanson (So., Rogers, Minn./Elk River HS) was the team's second highest finisher. Hanson covered the 5,000-meter course in 20:11.0. After Hanson there was a group of five Cobbers from places 57 through 62 that were separated by a mere 10 seconds.
Alissa Bilden (Fr., Miles City, Mont./Custer City HS) finished in 57th place with a time of 20:25.0 and was followed by Carrie Fransen (Jr., Coleharbor, Minn/Underwood HS) who finished 58th in a time of 20:27.0. Brittany Berger (Fr., Kalispell Mont./Flathead HS) claimed the 60th spot by running a time of 20:29.0. The next two spots in the race were claimed by Julie Miller (Jr. Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Erin Anderson (Jr., Bowman, N.Dak./Bowman HS). (Jamestown, N.Dak.)-- The successful story line for the Cobber women's cross country team in 2003 has been - compete, take time off to train like champions and then come back and post positive results. After taking two weeks off to prove themselves on the training ground, Marv Roeske's runners finished second at the Jamestown Invitational - a meet that was solely attended by either top NAIA schools or NCAA Division II schools.
Despite a step up in competition, Lisa Owen (Sr., Mineral, Virg./Minot (ND) HS) continued to be Concordia's top runner and a top-flight runner at all competitions. Owen finished sixth in a time of 19:54.10. That was less than 48 seconds behind the winning time of Lisa Nayes of Jamestown who set a course record at the meet. It was a season-best time for Owen.
Erin Anderson (Jr., Bowman, N.Dak./Bowman HS) stepped back into the number two position for the Cobbers. She ran a season-best 20:25.80, shaving almost 20 seconds off her next fastest time. She finished ninth in the individual competition. Julie Miller (Jr. Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) narrowly missed a top ten finish by coming in 11th place in a season-best time of 20:29.10. Alissa Bilden (Fr., Miles City, Mont./Custer City HS) and Natalie Hanson (So., Rogers, Minn./Elk River HS) paced each other to finish 14th and 15th. Bilden got the better of Hanson by posting a 20:44.20 to Hanson's 20:45.30. For Bilden it was her collegiate best time.
Concordia will travel to UW-LaCrosse to take part in the heralded Drews/Neubauer Invitational on Saturday, October 18 at 11:30am.
(Grand Forks, N.Dak.)-- For the first time in three weeks the Concordia women's cross country team competed in a meet. The Cobbers put their hard work to the test by finishing fourth at the University of North Dakota Invite . Concordia was the only NCAA Division III squad in the competition as most of the competing schools were NCAA Division II.
Leading the way for Concordia was emerging top-flight runner Lisa Owen (Sr., Mineral Virg./Minot (ND) HS). Owen finished eighth in the individual competition in a time of 20:38.2. She was only 64 seconds away from the overall champion. After Owen, it was Erin Anderson (Jr., Bowman N.Dak./Bowman HS) who finished 17th in a time of 20:54.6. A pair of first-year runners paced themselves to finish as the team's number three and four runners. Erica Lundgren (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS) finished 38th in a time of 21:26.9 and Brittany Berger (Kalispell Mont./Flathead HS) was right behind, finishing 39th in a time of 21:27.4. Rounding out the top five for the Cobbers was Natalie Hanson (So., Rogers Minn./Elk River HS) who placed 45th with a finishing time of 21:33.5.
