Match Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/15/07)-- The match between Concordia and St. John's on Sunday hinged on the first two doubles bouts as the Johnnies were able to rally in both matches and come away with victories en rout to a 7-2 overall win.
The loss is the first for the Cobbers in their last five MIAC matches. They are now 4-3 in league play and 6-6 overall. St. John's wins for the fourth straight time and sees their overall record improve to 11-5, while they up their league mark to 5-2.
The Cobbers lost all three of the doubles matches and were never able to dig out of the huge mental hole. They were able to come away with two singles victories and could have had two more singles wins that were lost in the super-set tiebreaker.
Concordia No.1 singles player Jordy Kamerling cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Trevor Beach. For Kamerling it was his seventh straight singles victory. He is now 9-3 on the year. The other singles win came from Ryan Smith who rallied from a 6-1 loss in the opening set in his No.4 singles match with Kevin Goihl to post a 10-4 win in the super-set tiebreaker. For Smith it was his second straight come-from-behind victory of the weekend. He has now won three straight singles matches.
The most dramatic match of the whole day was at No.3 singles where Paul Tuchscherer and the Johnnies' Mark Steelman battled back-and-forth throughout the entire match.
After Steelman won the first set 6-4, Tuchscherer rallied to win the second set 6-2. Tuchscherer was then down 9-4 in the super-set tiebreaker before he rattled off five straight points to tie the match at 9-9. Steelman then finished off the bout with two straight points.
