Match Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/12/10)-- After dropping three road matches to start the 2010 season, Concordia returned home and cruised to a 9-0 win over Northwestern on Saturday. The win snaps a five-match losing streak that dated back to the end of last season. It is the third straight season that the Cobbers have posted a 9-0 win over the Eagles.

Cobber head coach Troy Hanestad rearranged the doubles lineup to start the match. Hanestad partnered No.1 singles player Matt Edin with Jordan Swanson for the first time this year and the two clicked from the start, going out and winning 8-1. Edin, who won his 20th career singles match on Friday against St. Thomas and is 3-0 in singles play this year, did not compete in singles play on Saturday.

Swanson came up with the most dramatic, magical come-from-behind win of the season in singles play. Playing at the No.2 singles spot, Swanson pulled off his best Harry Houdini impersonation by coming back from a 0-6, 0-2 hole to win in the super-set tiebreaker. The Magician rattled six of the next eight games to win the second set 6-4. He then outlasted Northwestern freshman Keagen Blacke 12-10 in the tiebreaker. At one point in the tiebreaker the two traded a 40-stroke volley which was finally won by Swanson. That "abracadabra" point propelled Swanson to the dramatic win.

CC sophomore Chad Smith stepped into the No.1 singles spot and earned his first win of the season. Smith wound up winning 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 in a match that was characterized by swings in play. Earlier in the match Smith teamed with Kirby Johnson and the two won 8-4 in the No.2 doubles spot.

A pair of freshman picked up their first collegiate singles wins for the Cobbers. Devin Larson won 6-2, 6-1 at No.4 singles and Peter Dahlberg was a 6-2, 7-5 victor in the No.6 singles bout. Larson teamed with another CC first-year player to win the No.3 doubles match. Larson and Brian Olson claimed an 8-1 at No.3 doubles match. It was the first time the two rookies had been partnered together in the year. Olson also won his singles match. Playing at No.3 singles, Olson won 6-4, 6-4 to earn his second singles victory of the year.

Junior David Bloomquist was the final CC singles winner on the day. Bloomquist rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No.5 singles to capture his first win of the year.

Concordia will now head to a warmer climate as they travel to Orlando, Fla. for their annual spring break trip. The Cobbers will play five matches from Feb. 22-27.
