GREENCASTLE, Ind. (3/13/10)-- Concordia senior Leah Kay (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) earned her fifth All-American honor on Saturday at the NCAA national Indoor Meet at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. Kay finished in seventh place in the pentathlon to earn her second straight All-American award in the indoor pentathlon.
Kay finished the event with a total of 3,309 points which was only five points out of sixth place and only one point ahead of MIAC champion Kaelene Lundstrom who finished in eighth place. Kay was the top MIAC finisher in the national event.
Kay's final score of 3,309 points was 36 points shy of her school-record mark of 3,345 which she set at the MIAC Pentathlon last week.
Kay scored at least 700 points in three different events at the national meet. Her top point-getting event came in the high jump where she cleared 5-04.25 and scored 771 points. Her other two 700-plus point events came in the 55-meter hurdles and the 800 meters. Kay also had the third-best marks of all competitors in two events. She finished third in the high jump and the 800 meters.
The 800 meters was the final event of the competition and proved to be the most dramatic. Kay entered the last event in 11th place and needed to jump into the top 8 to earn All-American honors. Not only did Kay jump into the top 8 but she also passed Lundstrom who entered the final event in third place in the overall competition. Kay ran a 2:25.46 in the 800 meters which was just off her season-best mark of 2:24.20 which she posted at the MIAC Pentathlon.
