NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (11/24/06)-- For the second straight game Concordia lost a halftime lead and then fell in overtime. The Cobbers led 32-28 at the break before Maryland Bible caught CC in the second half and then outscored them 16-10 in the extra period to claim a 78-72 victory in the opening game of the Christopher Newport Tournament in Newport News, Va.
For the second straight game Concordia junior forward Luke Linz led the team in scoring. On Tuesday against MSU Moorhead he had a game-high 25 points, and on Friday versus Maryland Bible he had 20 points and 13 rebounds to record his first double-double of the year.
The game was a close affair throughout regulation as the contest featured 12 ties. The Cobbers held the biggest lead of regulation in the second half when Cody Dyshaw hit a 3-point basket with 14:37 remaining to give CC an eight-point lead at 42-34. Maryland Bible then went on an 8-0 run to tie the game three minutes later.
In the final ten minutes of regulation, the game was tied four times with the final game-tying basket coming on a Maryland Bible two-pointer with nine seconds remaining.
In overtime, the Cobbers went cold from beyond the 3-point arc. During regulation, CC was 7-for-15 from 3-point range but in the extra period, the Cobbers failed to connect on six attempts from beyond the arc.
Maryland Bible was the exact opposite. After going 2-of-7 from 3-point range in regulation, they hit both of their long-range attempts in overtime.
Concordia trailed the entire five-minute overtime period. After the teams traded baskets in the first two minutes of play, Maryland Bible hit a three-point basket with 2:48 left in overtime and the game was never closer than two points from that point on.
For the game, Concordia shot 40.0% (26-of-65) from the field and 33.3% (7-of-21) from 3-point range. Marlyand Bible connected on 43.5% (30-of-69) from the floor and 44.4% (4-of-9) from beyond the arc.
Turnovers once again plagued the Cobbers. After turning the ball over 29 times against MSU Moorhead, the Cobbers coughed it up 26 times against Maryland Bible. Maryland Bible tuned those 26 turnovers into 30 points as compared to CC scoring only 10 points off of Maryland Bible's 13 turnovers in the 45 minutes of play.
Anthony Boike and Dyshaw were the only other Cobbers besides Linz to score in double figures. Boike had 11 points and Dyshaw added 10 points on a 3-of-6 shooting night from behind the arc.
Maryland Bible's Tim Squire led all players in scoring. Concordia never had an answer for Squire as he pumped in 34 points including 11 of the team's 16 points in overtime.
Concordia will now play Southern Virginia in the third-place game in the Christopher Newport Tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m. (cst).
