ASHLAND, Wis. (11/03/06)-- Concordia started the 2006-07 in style as they shutout Northland (Wis.) 1-0 in Ashland, Wis. on Friday in the season-opener for both teams. It is the first shutout for the Cobbers since the 2001-02 season. The win is also the second straight season opening victory for Concordia as they beat the Lumberjacks 6-1 in last year's opener.
Sophomore goalie Jeremy Boniface and a tightened Cobber defense combined to blank Northland for the entire 60 minutes. Boniface stopped all 36 shots he faced in the game.
The lone Concordia goal was scored on the power play by freshman Blaine Gamst who picked an ideal time to record his first collegiate tally. The goal came at the 4:46 mark of the first period and Alec Holen was credited with the assist. That would be all the scoring Concordia would need as the Cobber penalty kill put the clamps on numerous power play chances for Northland. .
The game featured 21 penalties and and 42 minutes in penalties. Those 21 penalties resulted in 21 different power play opportunities. The Cobbers were 1-for-9 in their man-advantage situations while Northland was held scoreless in all 12 chances they had.
Concordia outshot the Lumberjacks 45-36 for the game. The 45 shots for the Cobbers is more than they had in all but one game last year.
The two teams will finish their series on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 3:05 p.m.
