MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/27/07)-- Concordia stormed back from a 4-0 deficit in the final period to score three unanswered goals but were never able to come up with the game-tying score and lost 4-3 to St. Olaf in Moorhead on Saturday.
Alec Holen led the comeback charge for the Cobbers as he scored a pair of third period goals. Cory Johnson was the other goal-scorer for CC who fall to 6-10 overall and 2-5 in the MIAC. The loss is also the sixth straight for the Cobbers who have yet to win in 2007.
St. Olaf barely held onto the car before it crashed over the cliff. The Oles separated themselves from the Cobbers in a pivotal 3:17 stage in the second period when they scored a trio of goals. The Oles snap a three-game losing slide and are now 5-11-2 in all games and 4-3-2 in league contests.
The biggest difference in the game came from power play chances. The Oles converted on three of their six power play attempts while CC was held to a single goal in their five chances.
Concordia ended up outshooting St. Olaf 29-28 for the game including 11-7 in the turnaround third period.
Cobber goalie Jeremy Boniface made 24 saves but earned his seventh loss of the year. St. Olaf goalie Jeff Wilde turned aside 26 shots to pick up his fifth win of the year.
Four different St. Olaf players scored in the game. John Paulson got the Oles on the board in the first period when he scored on the power play at 7:51. St. Olaf took control of the game in the opening seven minutes of the middle period when they scored three times in a span of 3:17. Sam Windsor notched the first goal of the second period on a power play at 3:31. That was followed by Nick Stalock's first goal of the year just :24 seconds later. John Egge completed the trifecta by scoring the eventual game-winning goal at 6:48.
Concordia was able to stop the Ole momentum and hold the score steady at 4-0 heading into the final period. That is when they started to climb back into the game. Johnson scored first at the :52 second mark of the final frame. Holen then added the first of his two goals at 2:04. He then put the Cobbers to within one goal at 4-3 when he notched his team-leading 10th goal of the year at 6:23. Holen also leads CC in points with 22.
Concordia was never able to come up with the fourth goal in the game despite having numerous offensive attacks in the St. Olaf zone in the final 10 minutes of play.
The two teams will finish their two-game series when they play at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27 at the Moorhead Sports Center.
