MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Concordia's non-conference magic failed to appear against UW-Eau Claire as the Cobbers were unable to recover from a dismal second period and lost 5-3 to Eau Claire.
Concordia was 5-1-1 in non-conference games coming into the contest with the Blugolds, but were unable to take advantage of five power play opportunities and lost by two. The Cobbers are now 5-6-1 on the season. UW-Eau Claire wins for the first time all season as they snap a 14-game winless skid and improve to 1-11-3.
The final outcome of the the game was foreshadowed in the opening period and then played out in the second period. The Cobbers failed to take advantage of three straight power play opportunities in the opening 10 minutes of the game. The scoreless game gave the Blugolds confidence and that turned into the opening goal of the game at 12:05. Concordia tied the game at 15:54 when Tyler Neu snapped home his third goal of the season. The Blugolds took a 2-1 advantage into the first intermission on a goal by Mike Schneider.
The game turned ugly for the Cobbers in the middle 20 minutes as Concordia repeatedly turned the puck over at their own blue line and were routinely caught running around in their own defensive end of the ice. UW-Eau Claire outshot the Cobbers 19-6 in the pivotal period and scored two goals to push the advantage to three goals at 4-1.
Concordia staged a third-period rally by scoring two goals within two minutes at the start of the period. Sean Lofgren scored his second goal of the season at 6:22 before Chris Babich let go with a low wrist shot that found its way through a pack of players in front of the net and made its way into the goal. The score at 7:51 of the third period gave the Cobbers new life but they were unable to score the game-tying goal and eventually gave up the final goal of the game.
Dan Lohr scored his first goal of the year at 15:02 to give the Blugolds the much-needed insurance goal.
UW-Eau Claire outshot the Cobbers 37-30 for the game. Concordia goalie Mike Dowers played his second straight solid game, turning aside 32 shots. Dowers collected 76 saves in two games over the weekend. Blugold goalie Steffan Braunlich made 27 saves to pick up his first win of the year.
Concordia will finish its three-game NCHA swing when they host UW-Stout on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7:00pm.
