Gameday Recap

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The good news for Concordia is that they were able to break out of their conference scoring slump against Hamline on Saturday, the bad news is that the Pipers were able to continue their new-found scoring touch and beat the Cobbers 6-3.

The loss is the sixth straight conference defeat for the Cobbers. Concordia is 5-3-1 in non-conference games but is still looking for their first MIAC victory of the year. With the win, Hamline improves to 2-5-1 in league play and 3-12-2 in all games.

The Pipers took control of the game in the final two minutes of the first period. After Concordia's Sean Lofgren scored his third goal of the year at 15:26 to even the score at 1-1, the Pipers rattled off a pair of scores within 1:14 to take a 3-1 lead into the second period.

Hamline added two power play goals in the middle frame and Concordia was once again left to climb a huge mountain to get back in the game.

The Cobbers made the most of their opportunities in the final period and a pair of goals less than :30 apart midway through the period gave Concordia new-found hope. Brice Berggren scored the first of the two goals, both on  the same 5-on-3 power play, at 10:31. Carl Babich followed that goal with his third goal of the year at 10:54.

Concordia tried to press the issue in the final nine minutes of play but were never able to get to within three goals.

The game was marred by 85 minutes worth of penalties. Concordia was whistled for 13 penalties, while the Pipers committed 16 penalties for 45 minutes. The Cobbers were 2-for-9 on the power play, and Hamline went 2-for-7 in their man-advantage situations.

Concordia goalie Jeremy Boniface made 27 saves and had his season record fall to 1-4-0. Todor Petkov stopped 22 shots to pick up his second win of the weekend.

Concordia will return home to host St. Mary's in a weekend series. The Cobbers and Cardinals will hook up on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7:00pm and then again on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2:00pm. Both games will be played at the Moorhead Sports Center.
