MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/18/09)-- Moments before Wednesday’s Breast Cancer Awareness game at Memorial Auditorium, Concordia head coach Jessica Rahman presented her mother, Naomi Beachy, with a pink T-shirt.

“It makes the night a special night when you get to honor someone that has been a special part of your life,” Rahman said.

The Cobbers earned a 74-47 victory against St. Mary’s in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball.

Beachy is a breast cancer survivor of 24 years. Cobbers assistant coach Rachel Bergeson also presented her grandmother, Marcella Gulsvig, with a pink T-shirt before the game.

Gulsvig, too, is a breast cancer survivor.

“It’s nice to go out there and play and support a good cause at the same time,” said Concordia senior Jenna Freudenberg, who scored a game-high 19 points.

The Cobbers (17-7, 16-5 MIAC) clinched the No. 2 seed for the MIAC playoffs with a victory and St. Thomas’ loss to St. Ben’s on Wednesday night.

“It was nice that we came out focused and ready to play,” Freudenberg said.

Concordia and St. Mary’s both wore pink headbands. The Cobbers also wore pink shoelaces and used pink T-shirts for warm-ups.

Proceeds from the game will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.

“It’s nice because it makes people aware,” Freudenberg said.
