(09/12/09)-- Concordia College came to Valley City with a highly touted offense, and they proved the hype is well deserved. The Cobbers scored the first three times they touched the ball, then used their defense to clamp down on the Viking offense, running to a 43-28 victory over Valley City State University Saturday afternoon at Lokken Field in Valley City. Cobber quarterback Andrew Larson (Sr., Fergus Falls, MN) finished 11-17 for 120 yards and a score, and rushed 10 times for 83 yards and a touchdown. Justin Brantner (Sr., Felton, MN) rushed 15 times for 72 yards and two scores. Trent Kosel (Jr., Edgeley, ND) finished the game 19-30 for 172 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for the Vikings. A.J. Pfeifer (So., Buffalo, ND) rushed five times for 50 yards. The Cobber offense established itself immediately, taking their first possession 68 yards in nine plays. Brantner would cap the drive with a one-yard plunge, delivering a 7-0 lead to the Cobbers with 8:58 remaining of the first. The Vikings would answer quickly. Taking over at their own 35, they would march 65 yards in eight plays, sparked by the 31 yard run of Pfeifer. Two plays later, Jordan Backstrom (So., Maddock, ND) would sweep in from five yards out, and the Vikings tied it up at 7-7 with 5:57 remaining in the opening quarter. Concordia would march through the Vikings for another 68 yard scoring drive, using 18 plays. A seven yard strike from Larson to Bronson Shepherd (So., Fergus Falls, MN) would give the Cobbers the lead back at 14-7 with 14:09 left of the half. The first major swing of the game occurred on the ensuing Viking drive. A fumble on a third-and-one play would be recovered by the Cobbers at the Viking 35. Concordia capitalized five plays later on a four yard run by Brantner, pushing the lead to 21-7 just 3:07 after their second score. The teams exchanged seven series with no result, but the Vikings committed a huge mental error to end the half. An errant snap over punter Derek Elliot's (Fr., Valley City, ND) head would be downed at the Viking eight with just two seconds left. Carl Hauser would punch in a 25 yard field goal for the Cobbers, ending the half with Concordia leading 24-7. The Cobbers used the opening second half possession to stretch the lead further. Zach Debeltz (Jr., Anoka, MN) would return the kickoff to their Cobber 44, and eight plays later, Larson would rumble in from two yards out, pushing the lead to 31-7 with 11:44 to go in the third. Each team would hold the other following the score, and the Cobbers would begin their third drive from their own 49. They were then bitten by the turnover bug on third down, with a fumble recovered by Viking Steven Edwards (Sr., Dallas, TX) and returned to the Cobber 6. Three plays later, Kosel would scramble into the endzone for a score, cutting the lead to 31-14. The Vikings recovered and onside kick, but threw and interception to give it back to the Cobbers, costing the Vikings a great opportunity to get back in the game. The Cobbers failed to score, but would a drive later on a 24 yard field goal by Carl Hauser (Sr., Fergus Falls, MN), extending the lead to 34-14 with 2:23 left in the period. The Cobbers would cap their scoring with a touchdown at 14:54 left of the fourth on a two yard run by Tyler Ahlf (So., Menahga, MN) and a safety surrendered by the Vikings on an errant punt snap into the endzone. The Vikings would strike late on a 32 yard touchdown pass from Kosel to Ken Eliacon (Fr., Miami, FL) and a 19 yarder from Kosel to LeTheo Proctor (So., Anchorage, AK), cutting the final edge to 43-28.
