Meet Recap
ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/25/10)-- If the NCAA Division III cross country world didn't know about Cobber senior Tom Sederquist before Saturday, they certainly know now. Sederquist broke away from the pack at the Roy Griak Invite in the third mile and went on to post the most impressive individual event win in program history as he raced to his third consecutive meet championship at the prestigious invite held by the University of Minnesota.
Racing against some of the top teams in the nation, and against the best in the region, Sederquist never relinquished the lead and clocked a time of 25:39.2 and won by almost five seconds. In the pack right behind Sederquist were several national-caliber runners including Jason Garvens of UW-Platteville who finished fifth at last year's NCAA Division III National Meet.
The win is the sixth of his career for Sederquist and adds to his wins at the NDSU Bison Open and St. Olaf Invite this season.
Sophomore Brad McConn continued his development as a collegiate harrier. McConn had a lifetime personal best mark of 27:08.6 and finished 51st. That time, and placement is better than Sederquist 's marks in 2007 when he placed 109th with a time of 28:34.
As a team, the Cobbers finished in 18th place out of 30 teams with a final team score of 473 points. CC was only 48 points behind 15th-place Bethel.
Sederquist stayed with the lead pack from the gun and then made his decisive move at the 2.5 mile mark. He opened a lead of 45 yards shortly after his breakaway kick and kept it up for the next two miles. The pack of six runners in the chase group narrowed his lead to 10-16 yards in the fifth mile but Sederquist kept them at bay by gutting out the course over the final mile.
Sederquist will try to continue his winning streak when the Cobbers head to the Jimmie Invitational on Friday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. The next big DIII meet for Concordia will be on Oct. 9 when they compete at the Wartburg Pre-National Meet in Waverly, Iowa.
