WAVERLY, Iowa (10/09/10)-- In the second biggest meet of the season, Concordia junior Tom Sederquist turned in another outstanding performance as he finished runner-up at the Wartburg College Pre-NCAA National Meet on Saturday. The meet is a precursor to the NCAA Division III Championship Meet which will also be held at Wartburg on Nov. 20. Sederquist ran a 25:06 on the course which is a lifetime best.

Sederquist, who won the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational two weeks ago, looked as if he might pull off another huge win but he wound up finishing second after a great 400-meter finishing kick from meet champion Jackson Brainerd of Colorado College.

The race turned into a back-and-forth between the top runners. At the mile mark, the top 2 runners had a 100-meter lead on Sederquist but he closed that gap just after the 2-mile mark and was right in touch with the leaders. Sederquist took control of the race at the 3.5-mile mark when he pushed hard to gain a 30-meter lead with only one chase runner stepping up to follow. Unfortunately, on the next uphill, the heat of the day took hold of Sederquist and Brainerd pulled up on Tom's shoulder with about 1000 meters to go. In the final 400 meters, both runners ramped up their kick, with Brainerd pulling away in the final meters.

As a team Concordia finished 13th in a meet of 25 solid squads. Sophomore Brad McConn continues to be the team's No.2 runner as he ran a 27:33 and finished in 60th place. Junior Tanner Sakrismo was the only CC runner to crack the top 100. He clocked a 28:26 and finished 92nd.

The Cobbers will stay with their top-level season competition when they participate in the UW-La Crosse Invite on Oct. 16 at 11 a.m.
