Play Like A Champ!

Meet Recap

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (9/1/10)--The motto for Notre Dame football has always been, "Play Like a Champ Today." After the Cobbers' first meet of the season, head coach Duane Siverson might want to change that cliché to, "Play Like a Champ the Entire Season!"

The reason for the new adage is Concordia junior Tyler Champ. Champ started the 2010 season by burning down the Hillcrest Golf Course and firing a school record 66 at the Jimmie Open on Wednesday. Champ bolted out of the blocks and torched his way to a 30 on the opening nine. He then came back in 36 to shoot 66. His previous best 18-hole score was a 70 at the Erv Kaiser Invite in his freshman season.

Champ's 66 helped the Cobbers claim their second straight Jimmie Open team title. Concordia shot a team score of 286 and won the invite by two shots. Last year the Cobbers fired a school-record 282 at the Jimmie Open.

Concordia junior Pat Deitz finished in a tie for second place as he went out in 34 and returned in 35 for a final total of 69. Champ and Deitz were the only CC golfers to shoot under 74. Senior Zach Kappes went 33-41 and finished with a 74. Sophomore All-MIAC golfer Andrew Whitchurch rounded out the top four for Concordia's first team as he shot a 77.

The Cobbers will step way up in competition when they play at the Golfweek Division III Invitational in Oralndo, Fla. on Sept. 11-14.
