Meet Recap

VERMILLION, S.D. (4/06/10)-- Concordia opened the spring portion of its 2009-10 schedule by winning the University of South Dakota Invite on Tuesday at the Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion, S.D. The Cobbers, buoyed by an opening round teams score of 294, finished at 613 and beat NCAA Division I opponent USD by 11 strokes.

Cobber freshman Pat Deitz carded a 150 (75-75) and finished in second place. He was part of the Concordia crew that placed four golfers in the top 8 and six in the top 15.

Fellow freshman Andrew Whitchurch faded on the second day and finished in third place. The MIAC All-Conference performer in the fall opened the tourney with a meet-best 73 but then came back with a 79 in the final day and finished at 152. Like most players in the field, Ty Champ took advantage of the better conditions in the first round but then fought through rain and wind on Tuesday. Champ went 74-80 and ended in fifth place. Junior Zach Kappes also started with a 73 on the first day but was then tripped on the poor playing conditions in the second round and finished at 158 - good for a tie for eighth place.

Erik Weiss and Jordan Siverson rounded out the top six for CC. Weiss shot a 74-86 and finished in a tie for 12th and Siverson went 76-85 and was in a tie for 15th.

Concordia will have a three-week break before returning to action at the St. John's Invite on Apr. 24-25. The meet will be critical in the Cobbers' bid for an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. CC will then play in the St. Olaf Invite on May 1-2.
