MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/09/09)-- Concordia conceded two goals in a span of 9:09 in the first half and fell to Carleton 2-0 in the conference opener for both teams on Wednesday in Moorhead. The Cobbers controlled the early part of the game but then allowed the decisive scores starting in the 28th minute. CC junior Marco Riboli had a game-high four shots.
The Cobbers entered the game unbeaten in their first two games and were looking to make it three straight. CC was able to control the opening 20 minutes of the game and had the first four shots of the game as Riboli stepped up from his central midfield spot and found good looks from the top of the penalty area. Unfortunately Concordia wasn't able to take advantage of the early momentum and the Knights slowly started to play themselves back into the game.
Showing why they are the defending MIAC champions, Carleton started to accelerate their attack through the middle of the field and was beginning to get at the Cobber net. Their offensive pressure paid off in the 27th minute when Wes Elfman took a feed from Tim Wills through the back of the Concordia defense and slotted the ball past Cobber goalie Mads Schmidt who was closing ground on the breakaway.
The 1-0 lead turned into a 2-0 margin less than 10 minutes later. Brian Rhodes cracked a shot from the left side of the penalty area and Schmidt was able to deflect the ball towards the right post about five yards away from goal. Sophomore forward Miles Silbert was following the initial shot towards the goal and sprinted after the rebound. He was able to catch up with the ball and his sliding shot found the back of the net before Schmidt or the Concordia defense could recover in time.
Carleton then held the better of the play fro the rest of the opening half and almost made it 3-0 just before the break. Schmidt had to make a pair of outstanding saves in the final :30 seconds of the period. The first, coming on a shot from the top of the box off of a free kick and the second from the rebound.
The second half was more of a tactical period as the Knights were content to sit back and make Concordia try and earn a goal. The Cobbers had a couple of solid opportunities but were denied by Carleton goalie Pete Semmer both times. Sophomore forward Riley McGlynn found himself all alone on the right side of goal just eight yards off the endline but his shot to the back post was corralled by the diving Semmer.
For the game the Knights held a 14-7 edge in total shots and a 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Carleton also had a 5-2 lead in corner kicks. Schmidt made six saves for the Cobbers while Semmer turned aside four shots, three of which came in the first frame.
Concordia will turn their attention to the annual Concordia Invitational when they host Presentation College (S.D.) on Saturday, Sept. 12 at noon and St. Scholastica on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m.
