MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/26/09)--
It was a dramatic rollercoaster ride for Concordia on Saturday against regionally-ranked St. Olaf. The Cobbers dominated the first half of play to climb to a huge high but didn't have a goal to show for their efforts which left them careening downwards. Concordia then scored a goal to take a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute to once again head skyward but the car came flying downward with less than five minutes to play when the Oles got the equalizer off of a deflection from one of their own players. The ride finally ended heading upward when Riley McGlynn got behind the Ole defense on the right wing and fired a shot past St. Olaf goalie Alex Kuehl in the third minute of the first overtime period.
The win snaps a six-game losing skid for the Cobbers, five of which were by one goal. The victory is also the first of the year in conference record and moves their overall record to 3-6-0. CC is now 1-3-0 in MIAC play.
It is the first loss of the season for the Oles who entered the game with a 5-0-1 overall mark and a 2-0-0 record in the league. St. Olaf is now 5-1-1 and 2-1-0 in the MIAC.
Concordia took control of the game early and poured the pressure on the St. Olaf back line. The high pressure tactic paid off as the Cobbers outshot the Oles 14-6 in the opening half. Unfortunately Concordia had nothing to show for their effort as their chances would fizzle in the Ole penalty area.
With the score tied at 0-0 at the break, Concordia finally got on the board in the 54th minute when freshman Jared Rice headed home his first collegiate goal. The goal came off of a corner kick when Kyle Quimby knocked the ball all the way across the face of the goal where Alex Dahl was waiting. Dahl then played the ball back across the net where Rice was waiting all alone and snap-headed the ball downward into the open goal.
The Cobbers then tried to hang on to the lead as the Oles started to mount the offensive pressure. It looked as if Concordia would finally get a result for their hard work but then the bad luck lightning bolt struck one more time. With less than five minutes to play, St. Olaf had a crossing attempt played outside the box. Sam Harrinton collected the ball and then his desperation shot hit a Cobber defender and spun into the far side of the net. Harrington's second goal of the season at the 85:34 mark sent the Cobbers into a tailspin as they tried to recover from the late equalizer.
Concordia limped into overtime and tried to regroup in the extra session. As quickly as the Oles had tied the game, the Cobbers came up with the game winner. Defender Drew Glogoza won the ball in the middle of the field and then sent a through ball to McGlynn on the right side of the St. Olaf penalty area. McGlynn then turned the corner and hammered a shot that beat Kuehl to the near post.
Concordia ended up outshooting the Oles 18-12 in total shots and 10-3 in shots on goal. St. Olaf held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
CC goalie Mads Schmidt came up with two big saves on the day while Kuehl finished with eight stops.
Concordia will stay at home and host Bethel on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m.
