MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/29/09)--
For the second straight game Concordia scored a clutch goal late in the contest and beat a conference opponent who was previously unbeaten in MIAC play. On Tuesday the Cobbers scored a goal in the 83rd minute and went on to beat Bethel 2-1. It is the second consecutive win for CC who moves to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the MIAC. The Royals, who entered the game unbeaten in league play, fall to 2-1-1 in the MIAC and 6-3-1 overall.
On Saturday the Cobbers needed to go to overtime to overcome St. Olaf 2-1. On Tuesday, Concordia decided the outcome before the extra session with a goal from junior midfielder Alex Dahl. Dahl's game winner came after the Royals had posted the equalizer in the 72nd minute of play. CC opened the scoring in the first half on a goal from Riley McGlynn.
Dahl scored his first goal of the season at 82:50 after the Cobbers won possession of the ball in the middle of the field. The ball got played into junior midfielder Kyle Kazemi who flicked the ball over to Phillip Bruckbauer. Bruckbauer then played the ball wide to Dahl who made a terrific turn on the Bethel defender. Dahl used his body to shield the ball from the defender and turned towards the goal to free himself for a shot. Dahl then clinically finished off the play by knocking the ball into the left side of the goal.
That score broke a 1-1 tie after Bethel scored their only goal of the game at 71:21. The Royals and Cobbers were dragging through a mediocre second half when BU earned a corner kick. The ensuing cross was played out where Bethel midfielder Andreas Scott stepped up and played a shot off of the crossbar. Kirk Darling was in the right place as the ball caromed off the bar and straight down towards Darling's feet. He then poked the ball into the net before the defense and CC goalie Mads Scmidt could react.
That goal changed the face of the game dramatically as both teams stepped up their play and started to push the tempo. It would stay that way until Dahl scored the game winner 11 minutes later. After the Cobber goal, Bethel tried to attack but Concordia stayed back and refused to allow another game-tying goal.
McGlynn opened the scoring in the first half when he scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season. It was also his third goal in the last four games. The goal was almost a carbon copy of the game winner against St. Olaf when he took a pass, got behind the defense and fired a shot past the keeper on the near post side. Against the Royals he was sent free by a laser feed from Marco Riboli. Riboli's 40-yard through ball sent McGlynn free on the right side of the field. He then touched the ball and hammered it past BU goalie Nick Kantor.
Bethel outshot the Cobbers 16-14 in total shots while Concordia held an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. BU had six corner kicks to four for CC.
Schmidt made four saves for CC to earn his 18th career win. Kantor stopped six shots and was saddled with the loss for the Royals.
Concordia will host St. Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 3 p.m.
