Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/12/10)-- It was a tale of two halves for Concordia on Sunday against Central (Iowa). The Cobbers controlled the play and held possession in the first half and grabbed a 1-0 lead heading into the break. The second half broke into a physical affair with the Dutch moving forward on the offensive attack, eventually getting the equalizer in the 67th minute and then winning the game just 4:51 into overtime.
The 2-1 loss in the second game played in Jake Christiansen Stadium drops the Cobbers' overall record to 3-2 on the season while Central wins for the third straight game and moves to 3-1.
Concordia looked like they might put up another crooked number on the scoreboard less than 24 hours after beating Crown 9-0 when they scored less than six minutes into the opening period against the Dutch. The Cobbers gained control of the game from the first kick and were rewarded when Jared Rice banged home a rebound. Alex Dahl and Marco Riboli were credited with the assists on Rice's third goal of the season.
Concordia continued to win possession in the middle of the field and then find Rice and fellow forward Riley McGlynn for chances in the attacking third of the field.
That scene would change after halftime when the game became more intense. Central started to win the ball in the middle of the field and find open spaces in front of the CC back line. That play would be rewarded when Leland Schipper was left alone on the right side and fired a perfect crossing ball to Brett McKenzie.who was left alone at the top of the CC penalty area. McKenzie then knocked home the equalizer into the far side of the goal to tie the game at 1-1 at 66:22.
The Dutch almost took the outright lead in the 71st minute when they were awarded a penalty kick for a Cobber tripping foul in the penalty area. Concordia freshman goalie Peter Runquist came up with the save of the season on the ensuing spot kick. He dove to his right and pounced on the shot from Cody Jandik.
Both teams had chances from dead balls and corner kicks in the final 10 minutes of play as the flow of the game was chopped up from the physical play. Concordia had a last-minute flurry turned away and the game would head into the extra period.
Central controlled the overtime session and got the game winner when Nick DeLucia's cross was met by McKenzie and he once again hit a one-timer into the back of the net.
For the game Central outshot Concordia 19-7 and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Runquist made six saves for CC and Dutch keeper Tim Maggard stopped two shots to earn the win.
Concordia will look to rebound against Macalester when they play in St. Paul on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 5 p.m.
