Gameday Game Recap
ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/15/10)-- For the second straight game it was a tale of two halves for the Cobbers and for the second straight game Concordia came up on the wrong end of the score. On Wednesday in St. Paul, Concordia was tied 1-1 at the half with No.5-ranked Macalester but conceded a pair of goals in the final 45 minutes and lost 3-1.
The loss is the second straight for the Cobbers and marks the second straight game that CC had been tied or leading at half and then ended up losing. CC is now 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC. Macalester remains unbeaten on the season and move to 5-0-1 in all games and are 1-0-0 in league games.
The game started out like a track meet and threatened to be a high-scoring affair. The Cobbers broke on top in the second minute of the game when Marco Riboli converted a penalty kick at 1:42. For Riboli it was his first goal of the season. The lead would last less than two minutes as the nationally-ranked Scots came up with the equalizer at 3:20 on a header from 10 yards out.
The teams then went up and down the field but only had two more quality chances in the half. The Scots missed a wide open net in the 23rd minute and Concordia wing midfielder Philip Bruckbauer was stopped on a breakaway in the 25th minute of play.
Macalester took control of the game in the second half as they were able to hold possession of the ball and play through the middle of the field. The game-winning goal came at 56:48 and was scored from a scramble in the CC penalty area. The Scots then tacked on an insurance goal at 80:38.
For the game, Macalester outshot Concordia 14-8 in total shots and held a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Cobber keeper Peter Runquist made three saves while Scot goalie Mark Mullaney turned aside one shot to earn the win.
Concordia will return home and host Gustavus on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the showcase athletic event of the Family Weekend celebration. The game will take place in Jake Christiansen Stadium.
