Tim Mosser Post Match Interview (2:24)
DUBUQUE, Iowa (10/02/09)-- No.17-ranked Concordia faced an unusual circumstance heading into their second match at the annual Border Battle Tournament. The Cobbers were coming off a loss to Simpson which was only their second defeat in the five-year history of the Minnesota/Iowa Tournament. The Cobbers rallied from their 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 21-25) loss to Simpson to sweep Wartburg 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 in the nightcap.
Concordia had lost only one match in the Border Battle Tournament and entered the day with a 19-1 record against Iowa opponents. Ironically, the only other loss came against Simpson in 2007 in a match played in Iowa. The stars were once again aligned for the Storm as they set the tone from game No.1, pulling out a 25-19 win. The Cobbers were able to regroup and take the second game 25-21 before Simpson took the next two games 25-18 and 25-21.
Jenna Green had another monster game for CC. A match after she had a career-high 21 kills against Macalester, she backed it up with another career high and had 26 kills against the Storm. She also added seven digs. Katie Vohnoutka was the only other CC player with more than eight kills. She had 17 winners and also seven digs. Rachel Wiinanen had a team-high 10 digs and Amy Sykora came away with 21 assists.
As a team, the Cobbers outhit Simpson. CC finished with an attack percentage of .395 while the Storm finished at .241.
Against Wartburg, the Cobbers were able to come up with the key points and won all three games in the later stages. Green and Vohnoutka once again led the Cobbers. They had 25 kills between the two and have now had at least 25 kills in the last six consecutive matches and eight of the last nine. Sykora upped her game 1 total and finished with 39 assists.
Concordia will finish off the two-day tournament on Saturday when they play host Loras at 9 a.m. and then play Central at 1 p.m.
