WINONA, Minn. (10/10/09)-- You have to hand it to No.19-ranked Concordia, they like to give the fans their money's worth. For the second straight day, the Cobbers needed to go to five games to beat a conference opponent. On Saturday Concordia rallied in the fourth game to force a fifth and then held off the Cardinals down the stretch to post their fifth straight win. The victory pushes the Cobber's overall record to 12-5. They are now 4-1 in the MIAC. On Friday Concordia had to rally from a 2-0 deficit to edge Carleton. Knowing that they have experience in tight matches, the Cobbers stayed with St. Mary's (17-6/3-3 MIAC) in the first four games. The Cardinals took game No.1 25-19 and then CC returned the favor with a 25-22 victory in the second game. The third game went to SMU 25-19 and the Cardinals looked like they might beat the Cobbers for the first time in six years. St. Mary's took a 21-18 lead in the fourth game, but then Concordia rattled off five straight points to take a 23-21 advantage. SMU countered by winning four of the next five points to take a 25-24 lead. That's when the CC experience paid off as they would save two match points and then ultimately pull even at 27-27 before getting the final two points of the game to win 29-27. Like Friday, the Cobbers took early leads in the fifth game. CC led 8-3 and then 10-5. Unfortunately the Cardinals would not go away and they were able to tie the deciding game at 13-13. A St. Mary's service error and then a kill by Ashley Beseman gave Concordia the win at 15-13. Cobber sophomore Jenna Green had 16 kills and 17 digs for the match. She was joined by Leslie Olson who also had 16 kills. Olson added 14 digs. Katie Vohnoutka was the third member of Concordia with double-digit kill totals. She finished with 11 kills and two blocks. Rachel Wiinanen had a match-high 22 digs and Amy Sykora had 44 assists. Concordia will put their five-match winning streak on the line when they play at Augsburg on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
