TOURNAMENT RECAP:

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (9/04/10)-- The young Cobbers passed their first college test at the UW-Eau Claire Invite on the weekend as they went 3-1 and finished the tournament by sweeping No.7-ranked Carthage (Wis.). Concordia tied for the best record of any team at the tournament and placed a pair of juniors on the All-Tournament Team.

Tim Mosser's crew headed into their opening weekend without a single senior on the roster and with nine first-year players on the team. The youngsters responded by outlasting Northwestern (Minn.) 3-2 (22-25, 25-15, 27-25, 24-26, 15-9) and then crushing conference rival St. Ben's 3-0 (29-27, 25-19, 25-23). The win over Northwestern could prove to be one of the biggest wins of the year as it helped the Cobbers gain confidence and the understanding that they can battle back against an experienced squad, one that featured former CC standout Greta King.

The second day started slow for the Cobbers. They failed to get anything going against host UW-Eau Claire and were swept by the No.13-ranked Blugolds 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 26-24). Concordia would then turn right around and come up with the signature win of the weekend. CC bolted from the gates and swept previously unbeaten Carthage 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21). The Lady Reds lost in the NCAA Regional Finals last year and were 33-6 in 2009.

For the tournament, Cobber junior Jenna Green led all players with 55 kills and 55 digs. She was named to the All-Tournament Team. Fellow junior Katie Vohnoutka was also placed on the All-Tournament Team after coming away with 35 kills, 38 digs and 12 total blocks.

Amy Sykora was consistent throughout the tournament as the team's setter. She came away with 89 total assists and averaged 6.36 assists per set. Ashley Beseman and freshman Kayla Hampton led the team in blocks. Both players had seven solo blocks and seven block assists for 14 total blocks.

The Cobbers will host their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 7 when they face Mayville State at 7 p.m. CC will then stay at home and square off against Jamestown on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
