MATCH RECAP:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/07/10)--It was just what the Doctor ordered for a home opener with nine freshmen on the roster. Concordia kept their opening night jitters at bay and rolled past Mayville State 25-14, 25-16, 25-19. The win moves the Cobbers' record to 4-1 while the Comets fall to 1-7 on the year.

The Cobbers, who were the top team in the "also receiving votes" category in the latest AVCA national poll, were led by junior Jenna Green who finished with 12 kills and 13 digs. She was Concordia's "go to" player at the net and made sure that the first home match of the season would be successful. Amy Sykora and Danelle Loomis had 18 assists each for CC and freshman Allison Bruggeman added a career-high 12 kills and hit .769 for the match. Sykora also recorded 11 digs in the three games.

As a team Concordia hit .295 for the match and had 44 kills. The CC defense held the Mayville State offense to just a .093 attack percentage and forced 20 attack errors. The Comets were led by Kacie Fortmann who had eight kills and eight digs. Ashley Torgusson had a team-high 12 digs and Ariana Odegard came away with a match-high 27 assists.

The Cobbers never trailed in the match until the third game. Concordia took control of the first and second games in the second set of 10 points. In the first game, CC broke from a 5-5 tie and seized control at 11-5. In the second game, the Cobbers turned a 9-4 advantage into a 21-12 commanding lead. The Comets tried to rally in the third game. They led by as many as five at 10-5 but then Concordia rebounded by going on a 9-3 run to take a 14-13 lead.  That would be the last time Mayville led as CC finished off the match by winning seven of the final 11 points.

Concordia will stay at home and continue to face DAC opponents when they host Jamestown College on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
