MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/16/09)-- In big games between nationally ranked teams it usually comes down to whichever team makes a mistake on defense or if any player can produce a spectacular play to change the game. On Wednesday in Moorhead, Concordia got a big dose of the latter and gave No.16-ranked Macalester none of the former as they held on for a 1-0 win in the conference opener for both teams.

Cobber junior Sue Obermiller's spectacular first-half goal was the difference in the game between the two nationally ranked teams. Obermiller recovered the ball in the middle of the field and then turned toward the Scot goal. She then weaved her way through the Macalester defense and broke free about 20 yards from goal. Obermiller then dribbled in all alone on goal and slotted the ball past Macalester goalie Tressa Versteeg into the far side of the net. The goal at 41:46 was Obermiller's third of the year. It also capped a first half that saw Concordia control play through their work ethic and play in the middle of the field.

The Cobbers had a trio of chances in the opening 10 minutes of play. Freshman Sarah Rounds had a shot bounce off the crossbar, then Brittany Mayer's shot from outside the box almost snuck over the top of Versteeg and finally Abby Habein had a shot kicked away by Versteeg.

The second half was a different story as Macalester started to win the 50-50 balls in the middle of the field and started to bottle up the Cobbers in their own end of the field. Macalester forward Emily Bardwell had several chances on the run but none of her shots was able to find the corners and the ball was either played into the hands of CC goalie Ali Nelson or outside the fame of the goal.

In the end, the Cobbers were able to keep the nationally ranked Scots on the outside of their penalty area and came away with the one-goal win.

For the game Concordia outshot Macalester 12-8 in total shots and 5-2 in shots on goal. The Cobbers also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Nelson made two saves for Concordia to pick up her second consecutive shutout and improve her record to 4-0 on the year. Versteeg stopped four shots in the losing effort.

The Cobbers will return to play On Saturday, Sept. 19 when they host Gustavus at 1 p.m.
