Concordia celebrates the game-winning goal in double overtime. Molly Voigtlander scored her first collegiate goal.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/26/09)-- For the second straight conference game, No.18-ranked Concordia needed to go to overtime to come away with a win. The Cobbers used the first collegiate goal from defender Molly Voigtlander with just 1:00 to play in the second overtime to beat regionally-ranked St. Olaf 2-1 in Moorhead on Saturday. The victory extends the Cobbers' program-record win streak to start the season. Concordia has now won eight straight to start 2009 and is 8-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the MIAC.
Voightlander's goal came after a foul on the left side of the field about 25 yards out from the St. Olaf goal. Junior midfielder Abby Habein crossed the ball into the top of the box where a pack of players were centered. The Oles' clearing attempt went straight up in the air and fell at the feet of Voigtlander who was standing behind the pack. Voightlander then one-timed the ball off the bounce and it hit the back of the net to the right side of St. Olaf goalie Samantha Sickbert.
The Cobbers broke on the board first when junior Sam Johnson collected a pass 20 yards out from goal. She then beat a defender to free herself for a shot and then fired the ball into the lower right side of the net. Johnson's goal at 11:32 was her team-leading fifth of the season. Megan Rice and Susan Obermiller were credited with the assists on the play.
St. Olaf recouped from having given up an early goal and started to attack the Cobber defense. Their hard work paid off in the 28th minute when Lindsay Howard took a pass from Catie Cristoffel and sent a low shot pass Cobber keeper Ali Nelson and into the left side of the net. It was the first goal conceded by the Cobbers in over 459 minutes of play. For Howard it was her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
St. Olaf held the better of the play in the second half as they made an adjustment to their central midfield at halftime. The Cobbers were unable to get the ball to their forwards and continually turned the ball over coming out of their defensive end. The Oles had a couple of quality chance for a game-winner in the second period but both shots went over the bar.
Concordia went with the wind to start the overtime and started to get control of the game. However, both teams started to tire and neither team was able to get a sustained attack on goal. The game looked as if it would end in a tie before Voigtlander stepped up and put home the game-winner with 1:00 left in the second overtime.
For the game Concordia and St. Olaf were tied in total shots at 13-13. The Cobbers held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. CC also enjoyed a 6-2 margin in corner kicks. Nelson made two saves for the Cobbers to earn her seventh win of the season while Sickbert stopped five of the seven shots she faced.
Concordia will look to continue their early-season success when they host Bethel on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m.
