NORTHFIELD, Wis. (10/24/09)-- Concordia was unable to come up with a game-winning goal in 20 minutes of overtime against Carleton and wound up with a 1-1 tie in Northfield on Saturday. The tie ends the Cobbers' 14-game unbeaten and untied streak to start the 2009 season. CC was one of only three teams that did not have a blemish on its record.
Concordia is now 14-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in the MIAC. Carleton moves to 6-5-4 in all games and 4-2-3 in league play.
The tie was easier to take for the Cobbers because of St. Thomas' loss against Macalester on Saturday. The Tommies entered the day with a 7-0-1 record but the loss drops them to 7-1-1 and three points behind Concordia. The Cobbers can clinch the outright regular season championship with a win or a tie at St. Thomas on Tuesday.
Concordia carried the play in the first 25 minutes of play and could have taken control of the game in the 19th minute when Sam Johnson got behind the Carleton defense and sent a cross past the Knight goalie and towards forward Sarah Rounds. Unfortunately for CC Rounds' shot went wide left and the Knights escaped the game-changing goal.
Carleton then added fuel to their upset bid when Marlena Hartman-Filson ran on to a long pass and was able to tip it past Cobber keeper Ali Nelson who charged out of the goal on the play. Hartman-Filson then collected the ball on the other side of Nelson and passed it into the open net.
The score stayed at 1-0 through the break and into the second half. The Cobbers finally got on the board in the 61st minute when MIAC scoring leader Sam Johnson poked home her 18th goal of the season off of a corner kick.
Concordia then pressed for the game winner after scoring the equalizer at 60:30. For the final 29 minutes of play, the Cobbers outshot the Knights 7-1 and regularly had the ball in the Carleton penalty area.
The overtime period was a different story. Carleton held a 4-1 edge in shots in the two, 10-minute overtime periods but neither team was able to come up with the winner.
For the game, Concordia outshot Carleton 16-12 in overall shots and 6-3 in shots on goal. Nelson made two saves in the game for CC and Knight keeper Beth Ashinsky came up with five saves.
The Cobbers will stay on the road and try to win the MIAC regular season title when they play at St. Thomas on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 3:30 p.m.
