Gameday Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/07/10)-- Whenever Concordia and Carleton clash in women's soccer, a couple of outcomes are guaranteed - the game will be a testament to very good college soccer and the game will go into overtime. For the third straight time the teams battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation and went into overtime. Unlike the two games last year that ended in a 1-1 draw, the Cobbers were able to score a Golden Goal and come away with a 2-1 win in the conference opener for both squads.

Cobber sophomore Sarah Rounds collected a direct pass off of a corner kick and attacked the Knight goal and buried a shot from six yards out to give Concordia the huge league win. Rounds' goal at 97:46 was her third of the season and finished off a game that saw the Cobbers outshoot the Knights 22-4.

The win is the third straight to start the season for No.10-ranked Concordia and is the 20th consecutive regular-season victory for CC. The last time the Cobbers lost in the regular season was the final game of the MIAC conference season in 2008.

Concordia started the game quickly and came close to scoring in the first 10 minutes of play. Carleton goalie Kate Trennerry came up with one of her many big saves in the game when she turned a shot from Abby Habein over the crossbar at the :30 mark.

The Cobbers put up four shots in the first 15:00 of play and were continually pinning the Knight defense in their own end of the field. That changed in the 17th minute when Carleton produced their first sustained attack and were awarded the first corner of the game. After the ball was cleared out of the CC defensive end, a scramble in the middle of the field set up Niki Tomita for the game's first goal. Tomita ran forward to pressure the ball and had a clearing attempt ricochet and send her free past the CC back line. Tomita left little doubt as she slotted the ball past CC goalie Ali Nelson who was coming out to cut off the angle. For Tomita it was her third goal of the year.

Concordia wasted little time in coming up with a reply. Less than three minutes later, Rounds played a ball into the middle of the field from the right wing and Sam Johnson collected the ball at the top of the Carleton penalty area and took a touch before delivering a laser with her left foot into the far side netting. The equalizer at 20:38 was Johnson's fourth goal of the year and 103rd point of her career.

The teams would settle into the game for the final 24 minutes of the first half. That style would continue in the second half with each team having a pair of quality chances. Rounds and Cobber freshman Gina Weiss were both denied on breakaways by Trenerry and Knight reserve Karli Haug hit the inside of the post with a shot from the right side of the penalty area. Fortunately for the Cobbers the ball didn't go into the net and instead rolled into the arms of Nelson who had turned after the ball went over her head.

The Cobbers had the better of the attack in the overtime period as they pressed for the game winner. Concordia had a 4-1 advantage in shots in the first 7:00 of the extra period before Rounds decided the game with her shot.

Nelson was not credited with a save in the game as three of the four Knight shots in the game hit the post or were off frame. Trenerry made nine saves for the Knights. Concordia also held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks for the game.

Concordia will head outside the conference when they host regional foe UW-Eau Claire on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
