Gameday Game Recap

ST. PETER, Minn. (9/18/10)-- No.14-ranked Concordia rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit, scored a pair of goals in the second half and went rolled to a 2-1 win over Gustavus in St. Peter on Saturday. The wins keeps the Cobbers perfect in MIAC play this season as they move to 3-0-0. CC is now 5-1-0 overall. The Gusties drop to 4-3-0 in all games and remain winless in conference play as they are now 0-2-0.

Concordia found itself in strange territory against the Gusties. For only the second time in 2010, the Cobbers trailed at the break. The only other time they were behind after the first 45 minutes they wound up losing to UW-Eau Claire. It also marked only the second time in the past two seasons that CC was behind at half in conference play.

The first half was a forgettable 45 minutes for the Cobbers. Gustavus came out and took the play to CC. GAC was rewarded in the 41st minute when Ashley Anderson scored an unassisted goal to give the Gusties a 1-0 lead.

The Cobbers outshot Gustavus 9-5 in the first half but were never able to come up with the quality chance. That changed in the first 15 minutes of the second frame. Senior midfielder Abby Habein broke free and was able to fire a shot past the Gustie goalie to tie the game at 1-1. Habein's goal at 56:50 was her third of the season. Sue Obermiller was credited with her first assist of the season.

Concordia continued to press the Gustavus defensive end in search of the game winner. That came in the 82nd minute when senior Sam Johnson took a pass from Gina Weiss and hammered the ball into the back of the net. For Johnson it was her fifth goal of the season.

The Cobbers outshot Gustavus 15-7 in total shots for the game and had a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Obermiller led all players with five shots for the game. CC keeper Ali Nelson made four saves for the win and GAC goalie Chelsea Bayer stopped five shots.

Concordia will have a week off before playing at St. Olaf on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. in a showdown of the only two unbeaten teams in conference play this year.
