Gameday Game Recap
WINONA, Minn. (10/02/10)--
Concordia's recent string of games has been like a four-year-old practicing fastening his tennis shoes - tie, tie, tie. For the third straight game, the Cobbers played to a double overtime tie. CC wasn't able to score in 110 minutes of play at St. Mary's on Saturday and ended in a 0-0 deadlock. The tie knocks the Cobbers out of first place in the MIAC standings for the first time in two years. Concordia is now 4-0-2 in the conference and 6-1-3 in overall games.
The tie marks the first time in program history they have recorded three straight ties. It also ends a grinding six-game road trip for the Cobbers. Concordia played five league games on the road in the past two weeks and posted a 3-0-2 mark. The lone non-conference contest was a 1-1 tie at Wartburg.
The story of the game on Saturday was the Cobbers' inability to capitalize on scoring chances. Concordia had a season-high 17 corner kicks in the game and recorded 21 total shots. CC also had several quality chances that were either off frame or stopped by Cardinal goalie Cassie Hulett.
For the game Concordia outshot St. Mary's 21-5 in total shots and 10-1 in shots on goal. The Cobbers also had a 17-4 advantage in corners and got several good looks off their set pieces.
Cobber midfielder Abby Habein led all players with seven shots in the game. She had more shots than the entire SMU team. Sam Johnson added four shots for CC. Cobber keeper Ali Nelson made just one save in recording her fourth shutout of the year. Hulett turned aside all 10 shots she faced and came up with her fifth shutout of 2010.
Concordia will look to put an end to their tie streak when they host St. Thomas on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. It will be the first home game since Sept. 11 and the first home MIAC game since Sept. 7.
