Gameday Game Recap
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/06/10)--
A span of 10 minutes in the second half summed up Concordia's game against St. Thomas on Wednesday in Moorhead. The Cobbers hit the crossbar twice and also had another shot ricochet off the post and fall away. In the end, CC was unable to come with a game-tying goal and lost 2-1 to the Tommies.
The loss is the first in conference play for the Cobbers since the 2008 season - span that covered 17 games.
It is also the first loss in the last six games for Concordia. CC drops to 6-2-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the conference.
The game was played on the back lines for both teams. Concordia was content on playing balls wide and through the St. Thomas defense for their forwards and midfielders to run on to while the Tommies knocked the ball to the Cobber back line and then pressured the backs into turning the ball over. The tactics provided two goals in the first 45 minutes as both teams came away with a single goal.
Concordia got on the board first when Sue Obermiller settled a ball 30 yards out from goal. She then spun away from a defender and played a diagonal ball to the left wing for Sarah Rounds who ran on to the pass just inside the top left corner of the penalty box. Rounds then hammered a shot with her left foot and the ball rose over the UST goalie and into the top right hand corner of the net. For Rounds it was her fifth goal of the season.
St. Thomas (7-4-0/4-2-0) tied the game in the 24th minute when Jenna Savino collected a missed clearing chance, dribbled past a couple of defenders at the top of the box and slid a shot into the right lower corner of the net. Savino's unassisted goal was her fourth of the year.
The second half was all about missed Cobber chances, crossbars and pipes. Concordia controlled the second 45 minutes from the outset. They had an early chance get saved by Tommie goalie Allie Byron. UST then missed a golden chance when a shot from Savino from five yards out was stopped by Ali Nelson.
Sam Johnson looked to give Concordia a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute when she pounded a shot towards the upper right corner of the net. The ball sailed just at the end and the shot ended up hitting the crossbar, bouncing straight down and then rolling away from the net.
The Tommies got the eventual game-winning goal at 71:25 when Katy Scherer one-timed a crossing pass from Stephanie McCartan from seven yards out.
From that point forward it was Concordia on the attack and St. Thomas trying to survive the final 18 minutes. Nikole Koehn hit the crossbar at 79:05 and then Rounds clanked one off the post at 80:00.
In the game, the Cobbers outshot the Tommies 17-13 in total shots. Both teams had six shots on net and three corner kicks. Nelson had four saves in goal for CC and Byron turned aside five shots to pick up the win.
Concordia will try and crack the lid off the goal on Saturday, Oct. 9 when they host Augsburg at 3 p.m.
