Gameday Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/09/10)-- After struggling to score goals for that past two weeks, the Concordia offense woke from its slumber and battered the Augsburg defense for eight goals. The Cobbers scored five times in the first half, as many as they had in the past five games, and cruised to an 8-1 win over the Auggies in Moorhead.

In the end three Cobber players accounted for seven of the team's eight goals as the high-scoring trio of Sam Johnson, Sue Obermiller and Sarah Rounds rediscovered their scoring touch. Johnson had three goals in the game and Obermiller and Rounds countered with two goals each. Obermiller also added three assists to finish with a seven-point game.

The eight goals scored is the second highest of the year for CC and is the most in an MIAC game since the 1998 season when Concordia beat the Auggies 8-0. The win is the seventh of the year for Cobbers who move to 7-2-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the conference.

The Cobbers wasted little time getting on the board and releasing their scoring frustrations from the last several games. Obermiller opened up the scoring spree by netting her third goal of the year just :35 into the game. That goal would hold up until the 22nd minute when CC added three goals in a span of six minutes. Johnson shook off the scoring monkey on her back by netting her team-leading eighth goal of the season at 21:49. It was only her second goal in the past five games. Obermiller and Johnson then put a tag-team effort on the Auggie defense for a pair of goals at 23:44 and 27:41. Rounds capped the five-goal first-half effort when she scored at 33:55.

Johnson repeated her first-half feat when she scored in the opening minute of the second half. She connected on her second goal of the game at 45:41 and the game had officially turned into a boat race. Rounds added her second at 54:10 before Augsburg finally got on the board. Carly Reimer scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year at 61:43 to bring the score to 7-1. CC freshman Gina Weiss then finished off the scoring with a goal at 65:50.

For the game Concordia outshot Augsburg (3-7-2/2-4-0 MIAC) 19-5 in total shots and 14-3 in shots on net. Rounds led all players with six shots while Johnson had a team-high four shots on goal.

Both teams played two goalies in the game. Concordia started with Ali Nelson and she played the first 60:00 without making a save. Haley Haddock finished off the final 30:00 and stopped two shots. Katie Gajewski started the game for the Auggies and also played the first 60:00. She stopped three shots and gave up seven goals. Taylor Becker made three saves in the final 30:00.

Concordia will look to continue their scoring ways when they host Hamline on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m.
