Gameday Game Recap

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (10/25/10)-- In one of the best games of the entire 2010 season, Concordia clashed with 2009 NCAA Division III runner-up Washington Univ. in a game that featured 44 total shots, 30 shots on goal and tremendous offensive soccer that would even cause the biggest anti-soccer fans to show a little excitement.

Unfortunately for the Cobbers, they allowed a goal in the second minute of overtime and lost 2-1. The loss ends Concordia's four-game winning streak and drops their overall season record to 10-3-3. The Bears remain unbeaten in their last eight games and move to 8-5-2 on the year.

The game went back and forth, up and down the field as each team wanted to attack with speed and run the ball at the opposing team's back line. The style of play led to several outstanding chances for both teams in the first 45 minutes of play. Concordia had the best of those chances as CC had a pair of shots cleared off the goal line in the first 20 minutes of play.

Both goalies had the hot hand in the first half of play. Both made big saves with Cobber goalie Ali Nelson making the biggest on a ball that was shot from 35 yards out after Nelson had come out to clear the ball away from goal. After the shot, Nelson sprinted back towards the goal and then made a diving save to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0. In the first 45 minutes of play, each team had 11 shots and there were 14 shots on goal.

The key moment of the game came in the dying seconds of the first half. Wash. U. scrambled to get off a shot as the final 10 seconds were being counted down on the PA system. An initial shot was saved with under :05 seconds to play and it looked as if the period would end without a dangerous chance. The Cobber defense let up as the final seconds were being wound down. That's when Lauren Steimle ran on to the rebound and hit a shot that went past
Nelson and over the goal line as the final second was about to come off the clock.

The last-second goal gave Wash. U. an unexpected lead and capped a very even first 45 minutes of play.

The Cobbers came out in the second half and exploded toward the Wash. U. goal. Concordia put up several chances in the first five minutes before Sarah Rounds collected a ball on the right side of goal inside the penalty area and blasted a shot past the goalie and into the back of the net. The unassisted goal at 50:34 was Rounds' 10th of the season.

Both teams also had golden opportunities to score the game winner and each was stymied by the goalie or a shot fired wide. Concordia's best chance came in the 66th minute when Sue Obermiller broke free on the left wing but her breakaway attempt was stopped by Clara Jacques.

Like many overtime games, the outcome was settled in the first five minutes of play. Wash U. played the ball into the Cobber end and was able to win possession. An initial shot was saved by Nelson and Bears' forward Emma Brown was the first player to react as she knocked home the rebound to give Wash. U. the win.

Concordia held a 22-20 edge in total shots for the game but the Bears held a 16-14 margin in shots on goal. Obermiller had a career-high 10 shots in the game and Rounds added five. No other player for either team had more than three in the contest.

The Cobbers had a decisive 8-1 advantage in corner kicks for the game.

Nelson turned aside 14 shots for CC while Jacques made 12 saves to pick up the win.

Concordia will finish off the regular season when they play at St. Ben's on Saturday, Oct. 30. The Cobbers have already clinched their eighth straight conference tournament appearance and will be hoping to pick up their second consecutive MIAC regular season title.
